Lou the Dog custom character plush, made to order from an animator's drawings: gray cartoon dog, tongue out

In this article

How do you choose a custom plush maker? Ask who sews the toy, whether you see photos before it ships, what the refund covers, and to see past toys next to the pictures they came from. SKAZKODROM has sewn toys by hand since 2009, 2,100+ so far: from $350, usually 2–4 weeks, photos before shipping, full refund within 14 days on personal orders.

A custom plush doesn’t exist yet when you pay for it. You’re choosing a person, or a team, to make something from your picture, so the questions you ask up front matter more than any product photo. Below is the checklist we’d use ourselves, written for any maker, with our own answer under each point.

What should I ask a custom plush maker before ordering?

These ten questions sort out most custom plush makers in one or two emails. A good maker answers all of them plainly, before you pay.

  • Who sews it? A small studio by hand, or a factory line?
  • Can I see past toys next to their originals? The drawing or photo, then the toy.
  • Do I see my toy before it ships? And can I ask for changes then?
  • What does the refund cover? Which reasons count, for how long, and who pays to send it back?
  • How long does making take, and how long does delivery take? Two separate numbers.
  • What is it made of? Fabrics, eyes, stuffing, and real fur or faux.
  • Who do I talk to while it’s made? One person, by email or messenger?
  • What exactly is in the price? Extras, revisions, delivery.
  • When do I pay? Before the work starts, in parts, or at the end?
  • Do you ship to my country? And roughly what does delivery cost?

Who actually sews a custom plush toy?

Custom plush comes from two kinds of places. Some factory-made custom plush services pass your picture to a factory, where it’s patterned and sewn alongside many other orders. That model is good at quantity and at standard shapes. A small handmade studio works the other way round: one maker builds a pattern for your toy alone, sews it and does the face by hand.

Neither is wrong. They’re different products. If you want one detailed toy of a character, a pet or a person, ask the custom plush maker straight out who will sew it and whether the pattern is made for your toy or adapted from a stock body. We compare the two kinds of toy in more depth in handmade vs factory-made plush.

Our answer: SKAZKODROM is a studio. Every toy is made to order for one customer, by hand, one at a time, and everyone who sews here has been making toys for more than ten years. Nothing sits on a shelf waiting for a buyer. The long-legged black cat below started as an illustration and got its own pattern, pencil-thin legs and ringed tail included.

Can I see toys a custom plush maker made from pictures like mine?

You should. Pretty toy photos tell you a maker can sew. Toys shown next to the drawing or photo they came from tell you whether the maker can match a picture, which is the part you’re paying for. Look for work close to yours: a cartoon character, a real pet, a portrait doll, a toy from a child’s drawing.

Our answer: more than 200 finished toys are on this site, each with its own page, and many show the customer’s reference in the gallery. Lou the Dog is one: an animator in Italy sent a colour sketch and a pose drawing, and the last photo on his page puts both next to the finished plush. Browse Plush From Drawings, OC Plush or Pet Stuffed Animal for work like yours. What changes between a picture and fabric is covered in will a custom plush look like your design.

Will I see my custom plush before it ships?

Ask this one early. Some makers post the toy as soon as it’s sewn, and the first time you see it is when you open the box. Others send photos and wait for your yes. With a toy made from your own picture, that photo stage is where small things get fixed: a nose a few millimeters off, an ear that flops the wrong way, a colour that looked different on screen.

Our answer: yes, and it costs nothing extra. When your custom plush is finished, we photograph it and send you the pictures. If something looks off, we change it and you look again. Nothing is packed until you say it’s right. Kal in Canada, who ordered the Grover plush below, wrote afterwards that he had “seen them all” and ours was “The Best Ever”.

What does a custom plush maker’s refund or guarantee actually cover?

Read the terms before you pay, not after the box arrives. Some makers don’t refund custom work at all, because a toy made for you can’t be sold to anyone else. Others refund only for damage in transit, or only if you send the toy back at your own cost. Three things to check: which reasons count, how many days you have, and whether you need to return the toy.

Our answer: on a personal order you have 14 days after the toy arrives to tell us, for any reason. You get a full refund and you keep the toy. No return shipping and no explaining. “Not what I pictured” is reason enough. Business orders (mascots, prototypes, patterns) are made to a contract instead and aren’t covered. The details are on our guarantee page.

How long does a custom plush really take to make and deliver?

Ask for two numbers, not one: how long the making takes and how long the delivery takes. A maker who quotes a single short figure may be leaving the post out. Handmade toys also vary. A big, detailed toy takes longer than a small simple one, and an honest estimate says “usually”.

Our answer: making a custom plush at SKAZKODROM usually takes 2–4 weeks; extra-detailed toys take a little longer, and you get a real estimate with the quote. Delivery then usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on the country, the courier and how close it is to a holiday. For Christmas, order by November 1. That leaves room for making, photo approval and holiday post.

What materials should a custom plush maker use?

Ask what the toy will be made of before you agree on a price: the fabric, the eyes, the stuffing. Ask about fur directly. Real fur and faux fur can look alike, and Four Paws points out that while garment labels say whether real or artificial fur was used, the origin of fur trimming is seldom declared. A good custom plush maker tells you in plain words.

Our answer: depending on the toy, we use plush, fleece, minky, faux fur, felt, faux leather, velvet and needle-felted wool, with polyester fiberfill inside. Eyes, noses and claws can be embroidered, painted, glass or polymer clay. We use faux fur only. We never use natural fur and turn down orders that ask for it. The fennec fox below has a ginger faux fur coat, glass eyes and a poseable body, all chosen with the client.

How should a custom plush maker communicate while the toy is made?

Before you order, notice how the maker answers your first message. Do they ask about size, pose and the details that matter to you, or just send a price? Do you know who you’ll be talking to, and how? A custom plush is a back-and-forth. The questions a maker asks at the start show you how carefully they’ll sew.

Our answer: you reach us through the quote form, by email or on WhatsApp. We talk through the details first, then send a price and a time estimate. You pay only if you’re happy with both, and then we start sewing. Sheba in Australia had been looking for dolls of Ellen and Viola from The Witch’s House for a long time. Her doll came with a spare calm head and legs, an extra we added.

Impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, and excellent communicators.”

Why does a handmade custom plush cost more, and what should the price include?

A handmade custom plush costs more than a factory toy because one person spends weeks on one pattern and one toy. That’s normal. What matters is that the custom plush maker tells you up front what the price covers: the size, the extras, any changes after the photos, and delivery. Ask, too, when you pay. If the answer is vague, expect surprises later.

Our answer: each toy is priced individually, by size and detail, and the quote is free. Custom toys start from $350. Some kinds start elsewhere: lost toy replicas from $295, portrait dolls from $365, pet replicas from $390, original characters from $400. Extras like a sound module, LED lights or wire for poseable limbs change the price, so mention them in your message. Photo changes before shipping cost nothing. Delivery is separate, usually $50–60 by regular post. Why the numbers look like that is in what your custom plush costs, and whether it’s worth it for you is in is a custom plush worth it.

How do I check custom plush maker reviews?

Reviews help most when you can tell which toy they’re about. The US Federal Trade Commission suggests you check how recent reviews are and watch for a burst of them over a short period, and look at a variety of sources rather than one site. For a custom plush maker, also look for reviews tied to a named toy you can see, ideally with a photo of the person who ordered it.

Our answer: every review on our customer reviews page names the toy it’s about, and each of those toys has its own page in the portfolio, so you can see what the person got. Larry in Washington DC found us online and ordered the hamburger man below as a gift for his wife.

Does a custom plush maker ship to my country?

Ask before you fall in love with a design. Some makers ship to a few countries only, and delivery cost changes with the toy’s size and the courier. If the toy is a surprise, ask whether it can go in plain packaging.

Our answer: SKAZKODROM ships worldwide, including the USA, Europe and China. The price depends on the toy’s size, your location and the courier; regular post typically comes to $50–60. A surprise gift can go in plain packaging. Every fact above is also collected on our facts page, and how we work walks through an order step by step.

Is a handmade studio better than a factory-made custom plush service?2026-10-02T12:30:02+03:00

They suit different jobs. Factory-made custom plush services are built for quantity and standard shapes. A handmade studio makes a pattern for one toy and sews it by hand, which suits a detailed character, pet or person you want made once.

It depends on the maker, and some don’t refund custom work at all. At SKAZKODROM, on a personal order you have 14 days after it arrives to ask for a full refund, for any reason, and you keep the toy. Business orders such as mascots and prototypes run on a contract instead.

You Take No Risks – We guarantee you love the toy or money back!

Custom toys start from $350.
A bigger size or extra details can cost more.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
