This one isn't a toy. A child wears it. Back in December 2010 we posted a short note: "Just finished a fox cub costume for a child, for a children's play." Those words came with a smile, and so did these photos.

The kids fox costume came as a set: a soft hood with a fox face, two big paws for the feet, two clawed paws for the hands and a long bushy tail on a strap. Nothing like it sits in a box here waiting. Every costume and toy we sew is made to order, for one child and the part they're about to play.

A fox from the ears down

The hood does most of the acting. It has a rust-orange faux fur face, a white muzzle and a shiny black nose. The yellow eyes have brown rims, so the fox looks a little surprised, which suits a fox cub on stage. The tall white ears have black edges. Long white faux fur falls down both sides like a mane, and thin ribbons tie it under the chin, so it stays put when the kid runs across the stage.

  • fox-face hood in rust-orange and white faux fur, with ribbon ties
  • two big black foot paws with grey claws
  • two black hand paws with grey claws
  • a ginger tail with a white tip, sewn to a brown strap that goes around the waist

Made for one child and one show

A store costume comes in three sizes and one face. Ours start with your child: their measurements, the play and the fox they have in mind. Maybe a sly fox from a fairy tale, a sleepy fennec or an arctic fox in white. Maybe it's not a fox at all, but a wolf, a bunny or a bear for the same play. Tell us and we'll work it out.

Plenty of grown-ups still remember the costume a parent made them as a kid. This is the same idea, sewn by people who do it every day. Before shipping, you get photos of the finished costume for approval.

We also make wearable pieces for older fans. See our Huggy Wuggy hat, a shaggy monster head you wear, and the rest of our plush costumes. If you'd like a fox to hug rather than wear, meet our realistic red fox plush, or browse all our custom stuffed animals.

The whole costume is faux fur. The face is a short rust-orange pile, so the fox's features stay clear from the back row. The ear fronts, muzzle and side mane are white, and the mane is long so it moves when the child turns. Black shaggy faux fur covers the paws.

  • Yellow eyes with brown fabric rims, and a glossy black nose
  • Grey fabric claws, stitched on one by one
  • Ribbon ties on the hood, and a soft brown strap for the tail

Since it's sewn for one child, we can make the hood roomier, shorten the mane or change the tail length. Tell us how the costume will be used: a few minutes on stage, or a whole day of school parties and running around.

A fox costume like this usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

We start with the pattern for the hood, since it has to fit your child's head and still look like a fox from every side. Then come the paws, the claws and the tail. The face takes the longest. The eyes and nose have to sit just right, or the fox looks off.

That time includes a small reserve for handmade surprises. If the play, the recital or the party has a date, put it in your first message and we'll plan around it.

When the costume is ready, shipping takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country. The post slows down around the holidays, so add a few extra days then.

Need it under the tree, or for a New Year show? Order by November 1 so it arrives in time for Christmas.

Before we ship, you get photos of the finished costume: hood, paws and tail. Check everything and tell us if something should change. It goes out once you say yes.

We've been sewing to order since 2009. This fox cub was sewn in 2010 for a play, and kids' costumes are still some of our happiest orders.

You see the costume in photos before it ships, so there's time to fix the ears or fluff up the tail.

If it arrives and you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days. No long explanations needed.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
