This kitty used to live only in a little girl's head. She made it up, a striped cat who lives on a rainbow, and she drew it on a small scrap of paper. Then it came to us, and we turned that drawing into a plush from a child's drawing: one toy, made to order for her and nobody else.

We don't sell ready-made cats. Every toy like this starts with someone's picture, and this one started with hers.

What she drew

The drawing is a few pencil lines. A cat sitting upright, two pointy ears, big eyes looking up with a tear in each one, a little "w" of a mouth, long whiskers, two straight front legs and a tail curled around the bottom. It's the last picture on this page, just as we got it.

The rainbow isn't in the lines. It's in the idea: this is a kitty who lives on a rainbow. So that's where the colour went.

From a pencil sketch to a rainbow cat plush

With a kid's drawing, our rule is simple. Keep what makes it hers. We could have made a neat, symmetrical shop-style cat, but then it wouldn't be her kitty anymore.

So the head is raspberry-red plush with the same pointy ears. The eyes are embroidered the way she drew them, looking up, with small red tears underneath and the "w" mouth between. The whiskers stick out long and thin, like her pencil strokes. The body is sewn in rainbow stripes, top to bottom: yellow, green, sky blue, pale pink and violet. The front paws sit in the blue stripe, and a soft pink tail curls around the base, just like on the paper.

A friend she can finally hold

Kids draw imaginary friends all the time. Most of them stay on the fridge door. This one got to step off the page, and now it goes wherever its little owner goes.

Materials used

This rainbow kitty is made from three simple things: plush, embroidery and stuffing.

The plush is a soft, short-pile fabric in six colours: raspberry red for the head, then yellow, green, sky blue, pale pink and violet for the body. Each stripe is its own piece of fabric, cut and sewn in the same order as the rainbow, so the colours stay crisp and don't blur into each other.

Everything we use is safe and eco-friendly. For your child's drawing we pick the fabric colours from the picture itself, or from what they tell you the colours should be.

Lead time

A plush from a child's drawing usually takes 2–4 weeks. The range leaves room for the small surprises that come with anything handmade.

First we turn the drawing into a design you can check. A kid's picture shows a character from one side only, so we work out the back, the tail and how it sits, and you approve that before any fabric is cut. Then comes the pattern, the stripes, and the face, which is embroidered stitch by stitch.

You get photos of the finished toy before it's packed. Want it ready for a birthday or the holidays? Tell us the date at the start and we'll say straight away if it fits.

Delivery

We ship worldwide. Once the kitty leaves our workshop, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and your customs office.

Around Christmas and other holidays the post slows down everywhere, so give it extra time if the toy has to arrive by a certain day. A present like this one works best when it's there on the morning, not a week after the party.

The easiest way: mention your date when you ask for a quote. Then the making time and the shipping time are planned together, before any sewing starts.
