A sweet goat for a sweet girl. That was the whole brief, and it's a good one. This needle felted goat was made to order as a gift for one young woman. She isn't from a shop shelf, and there isn't a second one.

She's felted from soft white wool, with a pink nose, pink ears and pale pink hooves. A little straw hat with a pink bow sits on the side of her head, and two golden horns poke out through it. She carries a woven basket of tiny red apples, and a brass bell hangs from a twine cord around her neck. Every accessory was made by hand, down to the apples.

What needle felting is

Needle felting turns loose wool into a solid shape without a single stitch. The felting needle has tiny barbs along its tip. Each time it goes into the wool, the barbs catch the fibres and tangle them together. Thousands of pokes later, a fluffy cloud of wool becomes a firm little body with a muzzle, cheeks and ears.

It's slow work, and that's why felted animals look the way they do. The shape is built up layer by layer, so the maker can push a cheek in or add a pinch of wool to a knee until the face looks right. The loose, wispy fibres you see around this goat are part of the look. We keep them.

Why there's wire in her legs

Thin legs made of wool alone are soft and floppy. So inside this goat's legs there's a wire frame, and the wool is felted around it. The wire gives the legs a skeleton: they hold their shape, the goat can stand, and she can sit on the edge of a shelf with her hooves hanging down, the way she does in these photos.

Materials used

This goat is made from wool, needle felted by hand, with small glossy bead eyes. White wool for the body and the long wispy coat, pink wool for the nose, the inside of the ears and the hooves. Felted wool is firm but still soft to the touch, and it keeps that fuzzy halo that makes felted animals look alive.

Inside the legs there is a wire frame. It lets the goat stand and hold a pose, and it keeps thin legs from bending out of shape over time.

The accessories were all made by hand:

Lead time

A toy like this usually takes 2–4 weeks. Some are quicker. The range leaves room for the small surprises every handmade toy brings.

First we agree on the design: the animal, the pose, the colours and every accessory. You approve it before we start felting. Then the wire frame, the wool built up layer by layer, the face, and last the little things, like a hat, a basket and apples that have to be tiny and still look real.

You get photos of the finished goat before it is packed. If the gift is for a birthday or an anniversary, tell us the date at the start.

Delivery

We ship worldwide. Once the toy leaves us, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and your customs office.

Around Christmas and other holidays the post slows down everywhere, so add time if the goat has to arrive by a certain day. A gift for her has a date attached more often than not: a birthday, an anniversary, Valentine's Day. Plan for the parcel to land a little early rather than a day late.
