Meet two small root vegetables with leaf hair. This Jerusalem artichoke plush pair, one pale yellow and one tan, was sewn by hand from an illustration, made to order for one customer. We don't keep vegetables on a shelf. Every toy here is cut and sewn after someone sends us a picture and says "this one, please."

The Jerusalem artichoke has a funny name, because it isn't from Jerusalem and it isn't an artichoke. It's a sunflower. The plant grows wild in North America, flowers in small yellow sunflower heads at the end of summer and hides knobbly tubers underground. Gardeners also call it sunchoke, sunroot or earth apple. Ours wears a little crown of yellow buds on top, which suits a sunflower in disguise.

Why a vegetable gets a face

What is it about veggie toys? Our guess: a vegetable with eyes is a joke and a friend at the same time. Maybe an illustrator drew one for a book and now wants to hold it. Maybe you grow sunchokes every year and the garden needs a mascot.

What we sewed

  • Rounded fleece bodies with stitched lines, like the rings on a real tuber
  • Green leaf tops with sewn veins and tiny yellow buds
  • Black bead eyes set wide, stubby arms and short legs
  • Two skin colors, pale yellow and tan, the way the real tubers come

Your own vegetable, or any drawing

You can order this artichoke plush again, change the size, the color tones or the face, or send your own drawing of something else. Looking for a green globe artichoke plush instead? Send that picture. We draw a pattern from your art, sew it by hand and send you photos to approve before it ships.

It usually takes 2-4 weeks, prices start from $325, and if you don't love it you get a full refund within 14 days. We've been doing this since 2009.

More food with a face: Hamburger Man. Or browse our plush from drawings and original character plush.

Both artichokes are sewn from soft fleece: pale yellow for one, warm tan for the other, and fresh green for the leaves. We use safe materials, so this is a toy for hugging and squishing, not only a figure for the shelf.

A vegetable toy lives on its silhouette. Here that meant:

  • a firm, rounded tuber body that stands on its own short legs
  • stitched lines across the belly instead of printed marks
  • leaves cut and sewn one by one, each with stitched veins
  • small round yellow buds and black bead eyes

Your drawing sets the rest. Different fabric colors, a bigger size or a new face are all possible. Ask about extras like a sound module too.

A Jerusalem artichoke plush usually takes 2-4 weeks. The shape looks simple, but a lumpy root is easy to get wrong: too round and it turns into a potato, too long and it's a sweet potato.

We start with a pattern drawn from your illustration. Then we cut the fleece, sew the body and each leaf, stuff it and place the eyes by hand. The time includes a small reserve for the surprises handmade work brings. You'll see photos of the finished plush and approve it before it ships.

After you approve the photos, your plush goes in the mail. Delivery usually takes 7-20 business days, depending on where you live, the carrier and the shipping method. Sometimes it arrives in about a week.

Couriers slow down before the holidays, so plan ahead. For a Christmas gift, order by November 1 so sewing and shipping both fit.

A gardener's birthday or a book launch? Count back: usually 2-4 weeks to sew, then up to 20 business days on the road.

We've been sewing custom plush since 2009, a lot of it from drawings that no factory would ever make. When someone sends us their own character, they know every leaf and line of it. So before anything ships, you get photos of your finished plush to approve.

If you're not happy with it for any reason, tell us within 14 days and you get a full refund.

Your artichoke, or whatever vegetable you drew, is made for you alone, by hand, from the picture you send.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
