This winged unicorn stuffed animal started as a pencil drawing. A child sketched a round little unicorn with sleepy eyes, a spiral horn and big wings, and wrote "silver" next to the wings. We sewed it by hand from that sheet of paper, for that one family. It was made to order, and we won't sew this exact unicorn for anyone else.

Put the drawing next to the toy and the same things are there: closed eyes with long lashes, a chubby sitting body, wings rising behind the back. We kept the shapes the child drew and added the rest: a rainbow mane and tail, a horn striped in rainbow colours, shiny teal hooves, an orange star on the hip, and quilted silver wings. Silver, as the note said.

Why a kid's drawing makes a good plush

Kids don't draw unicorns the way toy shops sell them. The legs come out short, the head too big, the wings huge. That's the charm, and we don't "correct" it. A plush from a child's drawing works when it still looks like their picture, wonky lines and all, so the kid who drew it knows at once that this one is theirs.

Drawings end up in a drawer. A toy made from one sits on the bed for years and later becomes the thing from childhood nobody throws away.

Materials used

The body is soft white plush with a short, fluffy pile, stuffed firmly enough to sit up on its own, the way the unicorn sits in the drawing. The eyes are embroidered: two closed lids with black lashes, so it always looks half asleep.

The mane and tail are long silky strands in yellow, orange, red, purple and light blue. The horn is sewn from rainbow stripes. The hooves are shiny metallic teal, and the star on the hip is an orange appliqué stitched around the edge.

The wings are the loud part: puffy quilted silver fabric, stitched into feathers. We never use natural fur, and all our materials are safe and eco-friendly.

Lead time

A unicorn like this usually takes 2–4 weeks. The estimate has a small reserve in it, because handwork sometimes needs the extra week.

First the drawing becomes a pattern that keeps its proportions: the big head, the short legs, the wide wings. Then the sewing, with the mane and tail set in bunch by bunch, and the embroidered face last.

You get photos of the finished unicorn before it ships. If it's for a birthday, tell us the date at the start.

Delivery

We ship worldwide. Once the unicorn leaves our studio, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and customs.

Holidays slow the post down everywhere, Christmas most of all. If the unicorn is a surprise for the kid who drew it, for a birthday or the first day of school, plan a few extra days and let it arrive early.
