This Rattus Rattus plush is the rat from Horrible Histories, sewn by hand, about 20 cm tall, with a black cap that comes off. We don't have a shelf of ready-made rats waiting to ship. Every one is made to order for the person who asks for him.
Who is Rattus Rattus?
If you've ever typed "what is the rat called in Horrible Histories", this is him. Rattus Rattus is the rat puppet who hosts the CBBC sketch show that started in 2009, based on Terry Deary's Horrible Histories books. He pops up between sketches to tell you which bits of the gross, silly history you just watched really happened, and sometimes holds up a sign saying whether something is true. His name is simply the Latin name for the black rat.
In the original series he was worked by puppeteer John Eccleston, with extra puppetry from Scott Brooker. Rattus also co-hosted the quiz spin-off Horrible Histories: Gory Games with Dave Lamb. In the series that began in 2015 he got storylines of his own and a whole wardrobe of costumes.
A rat for a family that grew up on the show
Plenty of people met the Romans, Vikings and Tudors through this rat. Maybe that's you, and now your kids are watching the same episodes. Maybe it's a history teacher who could use a desk mascot, one already famous for checking the facts. Or a friend who still quotes the songs. Rattus sits up on his own, so he looks right on a shelf, a desk or next to a pile of the books.
Getting his face right
Rattus is all about the face. Big eyes glancing up, pink bushy brows, a pink nose, a wide red grin with the tongue out, long whiskers. Then grey fur with a lighter belly, pink paws and a long pink tail. Miss one of those and you've got a random toy rat, so we match them one by one. Before your rat ships, you get photos to approve.
Plush or puppet?
On TV he's a hand puppet. The toy on this page is a soft plush for hugging and display, not a puppet you work with your hand. If you'd rather have a working Rattus Rattus puppet, look at our custom puppets and ask us for a quote.
More characters we've sewn from pictures are in toys from drawings, and if you like odd TV favorites, meet our Flat Eric. We're an independent studio: this Rattus Rattus is a handmade fan piece, not official or licensed BBC merchandise.
Your Rattus Rattus plush is made from safe, eco-friendly materials. He's meant to be picked up and hugged, not only kept on a shelf, so what he's made of matters.
Here's what you can see in the photos:
- soft grey plush fur, lighter on the belly and chest
- pink ears, paws, feet and a long pink tail
- a wide red mouth with a pink tongue, and long thin whiskers
- big round eyes under pink brows
- a black cap you can take off and put back on
He's about 20 cm (8 inches) tall, a good size for a desk or a bookshelf. Want him bigger, or with something changed? Tell us when you ask for a quote.
A Rattus Rattus plush usually takes 2β4 weeks to make. Nothing is waiting in a box. We start on your rat after you order.
A face-heavy character like this takes patience. The pattern, the sewing and then the small parts: the eyes that look up just so, the brows, the grin, the whiskers, the cap. Handmade work sometimes brings a surprise, and the estimate leaves a little room for that.
When he's finished, you get photos to approve before he ships.
Once you've approved the photos, your rat heads out. Delivery can take up to 20 business days, and sometimes he arrives in as few as 7. It depends on where you live, the carrier and shipping method you choose, and the time of year.
Around holidays couriers get busy and parcels slow down. If Rattus is a birthday present, a Christmas gift or an end-of-term thank-you for a teacher, count the making time plus delivery back from the date you need him.
Ordering a gift for a specific date? Please leave extra time.
We've been making custom, complex plush toys since 2009. Characters that live or die by their expression, like Rattus, are exactly the kind of work we like to take on.
If you're not happy with our craftsmanship for any reason, tell us within 14 days and we'll give you a full refund, no questions asked.
You'll also see your plush in photos before it ships, so there are no surprises when the parcel opens. One more honest note: we're an independent studio, and our Rattus Rattus is a handmade fan piece, not official Horrible Histories merchandise.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
