Some love stories start with a coffee. This one started with the cup. A coffee shop ran a series of Halloween cups, and one of them had a little dark monster printed on the side. The customer's girlfriend fell for him completely.
Cups get thrown away. So her boyfriend asked us to make the monster real, as a custom plush keychain she could carry everywhere. Made to order, for one girl, from one picture. You won't find him on a shop shelf.
One photo, and no legs
All we had was a single photo of the cup. A print shows one side of a character, and this one showed him sitting in a little cart, so half of him simply wasn't there. We had to work out the rest ourselves. We invented his legs: two short grey ones with tiny claws, so he could dangle from the clasp like he's about to climb somewhere.
The rest we kept close to the cup. Charcoal-grey fleece, a spiky tuft of hair on top, two white dot eyes, a stitched grin with two small fangs, and pale grey bat wings with scalloped edges. On our Russian site he goes by Dobryak Chelochka. Roughly, that means "the kind little guy with the fringe", because of that tuft. Spooky cup, soft heart.
A keychain that carries presents
On the cup the monster hugs a stack of red gifts. We kept that idea and made it playful. He hangs on a metal carabiner clasp, and his presents attach with Velcro. Put the gifts on, and he's a tiny courier with a red bundle tied in silver cord. Take them off, and he's a bat-winged monster with his new legs on show.

Cup Monster is sewn from soft charcoal-grey fleece, the same dark grey as the print on the cup. Fleece holds a clean shape at a small size, so the spikes of his hair and the points of his wings stay crisp instead of going floppy.
The wings are a paler blue-grey fleece with scalloped edges. His face is white on grey: two felt dot eyes, a smile stitched as a dashed white line and two little felt fangs. The gift bundle is a round sack of bright red fleece tied with a thin silver cord, with a grey and red fleece top.

You approve the design before any fabric is cut. Then comes the pattern, the sewing and the tiny face, which takes the longest on a toy this size.
