Bride and Groom Stuffed Animals, Made to Order

What do you give newlyweds? Everyone asks it, and most people end up with a toaster or an envelope. Our customer wanted something original, so they ordered a pair of bride and groom stuffed animals: a badger as the bride and a squirrel as the groom.

They weren't on a shelf somewhere. Nothing here is. We sewed this pair to order, for one wedding, back in 2010.

The bride and the groom

The bride is a badger in ginger and grey fur, with the black-and-white stripes of a badger across her face. She wears a sheer, ruffled white veil with a pink rose and green leaves pinned over one ear. Her tail is long, ringed in brown and cream, and it curls on the floor behind her.

The groom is a red squirrel with a huge fluffy tail and long wispy tufts on his ears. He's in a black tuxedo jacket with a small pink rose on the lapel. Both have big round eyes and soft tan paws with long fingers, and in the photos they can't keep those paws off each other.

A fine pair

Russians have an old saying about couples: "A fine pair, a ram and a ewe." It rhymes in Russian, and it's said with a wink about two people who suit each other, oddly or perfectly. When this pair left the workshop we couldn't resist making up new versions. "A fine family, a beaver and a squirrel." Or, our favorite, "A pair of tender paws, a squirrel and a badger." They rhyme in Russian too. You'll have to trust us.

That's the fun of a gift like this. A badger and a squirrel shouldn't match. Yet put a veil on one and a tux on the other, and they look like they were made for each other. Which they were.

Materials used

This pair is sewn from faux fur in a few different piles. The squirrel's ginger coat is long and silky, with even longer fur for the ear tufts and that big swishy tail. The badger has shorter ginger and grey fur, with black and white fur for the stripes on her face and back, and a thick tail ringed in brown and cream.

The paws are a soft tan fabric, cut with long separate fingers so the two can hold hands and hug. The eyes are glossy plastic, big and round. Inside, both are filled with soft stuffing, firm enough to sit up side by side.

Lead time

A pair like this usually takes 2–4 weeks. Some toys are quicker. The range leaves room for the small surprises every handmade toy brings, and a pair means two toys, two outfits and two faces.

First we agree on the look: which animals, what they wear, how big. You approve the design before any fabric is cut. Then come the patterns, the fur, the paws and the clothes, and the faces last, because that's where the character lives.

You get photos of the finished pair before they're packed. Tell us the wedding date at the start, so we can plan around it.

Delivery

We ship worldwide. Once the pair leaves us, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and your customs office.

Around Christmas and other holidays the post slows down everywhere, so add time if the toys have to arrive by a certain day. Weddings don't move, so give the parcel a comfortable margin and plan for the pair to land a week or two before the big day, not the morning of.
