Big grin, arms up, as if he's about to take off over the fields. This Totoro plush was sewn by hand for one customer, and that's how we make every Totoro: made to order, in the size you want, with the face you remember from the film.

This page is our little Totoro collection. The grinning grey one comes first. Scroll the photos and you'll meet two earlier versions too.

The forest spirit everyone knows

Totoro comes from My Neighbor Totoro, the 1988 Studio Ghibli film by Hayao Miyazaki. Two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, move to the countryside and find a huge, shaggy spirit living in an old camphor tree. He waits beside them at a rainy bus stop, loves the sound of raindrops on a borrowed umbrella, and flies them over the fields on a spinning top. He later became Studio Ghibli's logo. For a lot of people he's still the gentlest giant of their childhood.

Three Totoros, three faces

Totoro was one of the first characters we sewed after opening in 2009, and no two came out alike:

  • The grinning one: charcoal-grey fur, a huge stitched smile, both arms raised, glossy black claws.
  • The 2010 Totoro: arms stretched out wide, blue eyes looking up at the sky.
  • The 2009 Totoro: dark navy in curly fleece, one of our very first toys.

A matchbox sits next to the older two in the photos, so you can see how big they are.

Why order one when shops sell Totoro?

You can buy Totoro plush almost anywhere, including official Studio Ghibli toys by Sun Arrow. Those come in set sizes, with one face for everybody. Ours are made for one person. You choose the size (practically any, from a shelf buddy to one you can nap on), the expression from the film, the pose, and a name tag with a greeting sewn on, so the gift arrives signed.

Maybe it's for a friend who still grins like Totoro at the bus stop every time it rains. Maybe it's for a kid about to watch the film for the first time. Either way, a Totoro made just for them is about as personal as a gift gets.

Tell us the size, the face and the name for the tag, and we'll agree every detail with you before we start sewing. Want another anime character instead? See our custom anime plush page, or more fairytale plushies.

Our Totoro plush is a handmade fan piece from an independent studio, not official Studio Ghibli merchandise.

The grinning Totoro is made from a long-pile charcoal-grey faux fur, so he looks shaggy from every side, tail included. His belly is a softer, pale sage plush with dark grey chevrons, just like the markings in the film.

The details that make his face:

  • big white teeth with stitched lines and a black outline around the grin
  • round white eyes with black pupils and a small glossy black nose
  • long glossy black whiskers and black claws on every paw and foot
  • darker grey pads on his palms

Everything is safe and eco-friendly. Prefer navy curly fleece like our 2009 Totoro, a different shade of grey, or a name tag? Tell us, and we'll build it into your order.

Your Totoro usually takes 3–4 weeks to make. That covers the pattern for the size you picked, cutting the fur, sewing the body, and the slow part: the face, teeth, whiskers and claws, all done by hand.

The estimate has a little reserve built in, because handmade work sometimes needs an extra evening to get a grin exactly right. When he's finished, we send you photos before shipping, so you meet your Totoro first.

Ordering for a birthday or a holiday? Add the making time to delivery and write to us early.

How long delivery takes depends on where you live, the courier and the shipping method. It can take up to 20 business days, and sometimes only 7.

Around holidays, couriers get busy and parcels can run late. If Totoro is a gift for a fixed date, like a birthday, Christmas, or the evening you finally watch the film together, order with time to spare.

Tell us your date when you order, and we'll say honestly whether it can work. Better that than a Totoro stuck in a sorting center on the big day.

We've been sewing custom plush toys since 2009, and Totoro has been with us almost that long. Every order gets the same care, whether it's a small Totoro for a desk or one big enough to nap on.

If you're not happy with our work for any reason within 14 days, we'll refund your money in full. You don't have to send the toy back.

We promise that because a plush like this is personal. It should make you grin the way Totoro does, not just look close enough.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
