From a photo, through an AI picture, to a doll
He started with an ordinary photo of her and turned it into a stylised picture with an AI image tool. That picture came to our workshop, and it's the last image on this page. We used it as the sketch and sewed the whole doll by hand from it.
A picture like that is a good starting point. It already settles the style: a big round head, a small body, large dark eyes. Our job was to turn it into fabric and keep her recognisable.
The details that make it her
She has big glossy black eyes with lashes, soft pink cheeks, a small smile and a tiny ring in her nose. Black studs in her ears. A green vine choker and a black cord with a small bronze pendant.
On her arms are her tattoos, stitched in: a little pink butterfly and a few fine dark lines. She wears a white crop top and navy pinstriped shorts with a bronze button.
Four wigs, one doll
The wigs are cut from layers of felt, strand by strand. Pink with a choppy fringe, a short green bob, a messy blond cut and a sleek black one. Swap them and the doll gets a new look, the same way she does.
That's the whole idea. The doll doesn't freeze her in one moment. It keeps up with her.
