You know this face. Wide glassy eyes, a thin grin, paws folded between the knees like it's waiting for a bus that isn't coming. This is our Stoned Fox plush: the most famous bad taxidermy on the internet, sewn from faux fur as a soft toy you can actually hug.

It was made to order. We don't sell ready foxes off a shelf. Every one is sewn for one person, and yours can have its own expression.

How a stuffed fox became a meme

The original is a real piece of taxidermy by British artist Adele Morse, made while she was studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London. In October 2012 she listed it on eBay. Within weeks it had taken over the Russian internet as упоротый лис, which translates roughly as the stoned fox. People cut it out and dropped it into famous paintings, film stills and news photos. From there it spread everywhere under the name Stoned Fox, and it still turns up whenever someone's pet pulls the same face.

Ours was a gift

We sewed this fox in the winter of 2012–13, while the meme was at its loudest. It was a present: a white ribbon on its back carries a printed note from the friend who ordered it. That's a nice way to give a meme. Your friend gets the joke and a fox to keep on the sofa.

We copied the look people love. Long ginger faux fur, a cream chest and muzzle, dark brown legs and socks, a big bushy tail with a dark tip. The legs hang long and loose, so it sits on a shelf or the edge of a box just like the photo. Then the face: round green eyes set a little too wide, a black nose, long whiskers and that stitched, slightly unsure smile.

Soft taxidermy, no fox harmed

Real taxidermy needs a real animal. This one needs only faux fur and stuffing. It belongs with our other plush faux taxidermy, next to the grinning moose head and the mammoth head. It works just as well among our realistic stuffed animals.

Materials used

This Stoned Fox is made of faux fur, plush fabric and soft stuffing. We never use real fur, and nothing on this fox came from an animal, which is a nice twist for a toy of a taxidermy.

Long-pile ginger and caramel faux fur on the head, body and the big bushy tail.
Dark brown faux fur on the legs and paws, and a dark tip on the tail.
Cream-white faux fur on the chest and muzzle, with pale fluffy ear insides.
Round green eyes, a black nose, long whiskers and a stitched grin.

The long fur makes the fox look shaggy and a bit wild, just like the original, but it stays soft to hold. For your own fox we can change the fur shade, the size or the expression. A soft brush keeps the long fur neat. Spot clean only, never the washing machine.

Lead time

A fox like this usually takes 2–4 weeks. That range leaves room for the small surprises that come with anything sewn by hand.

First we agree the look with you: size, fur colours and, most of all, the face. Then the pattern is drawn, the body and the long legs are sewn and stuffed, and the eyes and grin go on last, because they decide whether it reads as the Stoned Fox or just a fox.

You get photos of the finished fox before it's packed. If it's a birthday present, tell us the date at the start and we'll say right away if it fits.

Delivery

We ship worldwide. Once the fox leaves our workshop, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and your customs office.

Around Christmas and other holidays the post slows down everywhere. A meme fox makes a very good gift, so if it's meant for a party or a friend's birthday, order a little earlier than feels necessary.
