Mew, the catnip mouse from The Christmas Toy

In Jim Henson's The Christmas Toy (1986), Mew belongs to the family cat. He's a little cloth mouse that smells of catnip and rolls around on wheels. The other toys never let him forget it. "Ew! It's Mew!" they say, and he tells them cat toys are supposed to smell like catnip.

Rugby Tiger is his best friend anyway. When Rugby goes missing on Christmas Eve, Mew sneaks out alone to find him. He opens the closet door with a trick he learned from the cat, and his very convincing meow keeps the toys from being found out. Then he slips off Rugby's tail, gets caught in the hall and freezes.

The scene everyone remembers

Rugby brings him back and sings "Together at Christmas" to him, and little Mew twitches and wakes up. Ask anyone who watched the special every December: that's the part. Plenty of grown-ups admit they still tear up at it.

The Mew plush fans couldn't buy

Fans have been hunting for one for years. Some ask crocheters to make him and call him their holy grail plush. Others say Rugby isn't complete without Mew, and it's hard to argue.

Materials used

You pick how your Mew is made. There are two ways, and both are made to order.

Crocheted yarn Mew, like in our photo

The Mew in our photo is crocheted from soft gray yarn, with pink ears, a black nose, shiny black eyes and a long thin tail, plus a wheel on the side like the mouse from the 1986 special. Crochet gives him that handmade, slightly textured look many fans picture when they think of Mew.

Sewn plush Mew, like our Rugby Tiger

Want him to match a sewn Rugby? We can make Mew from plush fabric instead. For sewn character toys we use:

Plush: soft base fabric for a cuddly body.
Fur: synthetic fur wherever a character needs a fluffy coat.
Plastic eyes: sewn in or fixed with safety backings.
Holofiber: synthetic stuffing that keeps the toy plump.

Just tell us in your quote request which Mew you want. Either way, everything is safe and eco-friendly, so he can sit under the tree next to Rugby.

Lead time

Making Mew usually takes 2–3 weeks.

He's small, but small doesn't mean quick. His round body, ears, tail and wheel are shaped and sewn by hand for your order, and the face takes the longest. Move the eyes a little and he stops looking like Mew and turns into just another toy mouse.

When he's finished, we send you photos. You approve him, and then he gets packed for shipping.

Delivery

Delivery time depends on where you live, the shipping company and method you choose, and how close it is to a holiday. It can take up to 20 business days, and sometimes only 7.

Mew is a Christmas character, and December is exactly when couriers are busiest and parcels run late. If he's meant for Christmas Eve, order early.

Need him by a certain date? Add the 2–3 weeks of making to the delivery time. Ordering Rugby too? Ask for both in one quote. Mew also makes a good gift after the holidays, for the friend who always shows up.
