Say "How to Train Your Dragon" and most people picture a black dragon. Readers of the books know better. In Cressida Cowell's novels, Toothless is a small green Common-or-Garden dragon with no teeth and a lot of opinions. This green dragon plush was inspired by those books, not the films. We sewed him by hand in 2025, made to order like every toy we make. He wasn't pulled from a warehouse shelf.
It started with a sketch
First came a drawing: a green silhouette with big eyes and wings shaped a bit like leaves. Then the slow part. We tried fabric after fabric, looking for a green that felt strong and kind at once. The wings got a bright red lining, so every time they open you see a flash of red, as if a little fire is hiding in there.
He has two curly horns on top of his head and pointed ears with a pale green inside. Soft spikes run from his neck to the tip of his tail. He stands on four legs and gives you a sideways look with big white-and-black eyes, like a dragon who is planning something small and annoying.
A book dragon, not a movie one
Black Night Fury plushies are easy to find. A dragon that looks like the pictures in the books is not. If you grew up with Hiccup's books, or you read them to your kids now, we can sew the dragon you imagined while reading. Prefer the film version? Here's our Toothless plush.
We're an independent studio, not affiliated with Cressida Cowell, her publishers or DreamWorks.
Make your own
- Send a book illustration, fan art or your own sketch.
- Choose the size and colours: another green, a different wing lining, a smaller dragon for a backpack.
- On request: wire in the wings and tail so they hold a pose, a sound module or LED lights.
A custom dragon like this starts from $365, and the quote is free. You see photos of the finished toy before it ships. More dragons live in Dragon Plushies, more storybook heroes in Book Character Plushies.
The body is soft green plush with a slightly mottled pile, so the colour shifts a little in the light, the way scales would. The wings are lined with shiny red fabric and edged in the same green as the body. The inside of the ears is a paler green.
The spikes along the back and tail are soft, so he's fine to hug.
All our materials are premium and hypoallergenic. If you want a furry dragon, we use faux fur only, never natural fur.
- Any shade of green, or a different colour altogether
- Another colour for the wing lining
- On request: poseable wings and tail on a wire frame, a sound module, LED lights
A dragon like this usually takes 2-4 weeks. We keep a few spare days for the surprises that come with handmade work.
Most of that time goes into the pattern. A long neck, four legs, two wings and a spiked tail all have to balance so he stands up on his own. Then come the sewing, the wing lining and the eyes.
Before it ships, you get photos of the finished dragon and can ask for changes. If he's for a birthday, put the date in your first message.
We ship worldwide. Once your dragon leaves the studio, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country, the carrier and customs.
Mail slows down before the holidays, and Christmas parcels can take longer. For a Christmas dragon, order by November 1.
A book dragon makes a good gift for a young reader who just finished the series, or for a grown-up who read it years ago. Tell us the date when you write, and we'll check that making time plus shipping fits before you pay.
We've been sewing toys to order since 2009. A lot of them start from a picture in someone's head, and we know the toy has to match it.
You see photos of the finished dragon before it's packed, and you can ask us to fix anything. If he arrives and you don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.
That goes for the curly horns too.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
