A huge black moustache, a gold earring, a skull on his bandana and an anchor tattoo with his name under it. This Barmaley doll is the pirate villain from Korney Chukovsky's tales, sewn by hand to order.

We don't keep ready toys. You tell us which character you want, and we make that one doll for you.

On our Russian site we introduced him the way the cartoon does: bloodthirsty and merciless. Also a very colourful character.

Who Barmaley is

Chukovsky wrote Barmaley in 1925. The poem warns little children never to go walking in Africa, and two kids, Tanya and Vanya, go anyway. There they meet the robber who calls himself bloodthirsty and merciless. Doctor Aibolit turns up, and a crocodile swallows Barmaley whole. From inside, the villain promises to be kinder and to love children.

Once he's out, he dances and swears he'll bake pies and pretzels for the kids. Soyuzmultfilm animated him in 1941 and 1973. Rolan Bykov played him in the 1967 film Aybolit 66, and Kievnauchfilm brought him back in its 1980s Doctor Aibolit series.

Pirate first, baker second

That happy ending suits his second outfit. Besides the pirate gear, we photographed him in a white chef's jacket and a tall chef's hat. Barmaley after the crocodile, ready to bake.

  • Pirate look: a navy bandana with a white skull and crossbones, a red shirt laced at the neck, a brown vest, navy trousers and big black boots with yellow tops
  • The face: a long nose, wide eyes, rosy cheeks, stubble, a small black goatee and a moustache that sticks out past his ears
  • Hands: separate fingers, so he can wave them about like he's telling you off
  • Baker look: a white chef's jacket with a collar and a tall white chef's hat

Want him closer to the 1967 film, a cartoon frame or an old book illustration? Send the picture. Pick a size in the order form, ask for extras like a tray of pies or a sound module, and you'll see photos of the finished doll before it ships.

More people-shaped characters live in Character Dolls. From other Soviet cartoons we made the Bremen Town Musicians dolls, and more cartoon favourites are in Toys From Animated Films.

We're an independent studio. This is a handmade fan piece, not an official product of any film studio or publisher.

Every piece of his outfit is cut and sewn for this one doll.

  • A sewn fabric head and hands, with the cheeks, stubble and goatee worked in by hand
  • A long black moustache and black hair on the sides of his head
  • A red shirt with lacing at the neck and a brown vest over it
  • Navy trousers, yellow boot tops and big black boots
  • A navy bandana with a skull and crossbones, plus a gold hoop earring
  • The second look: a white chef's jacket and a tall chef's hat

The filling is hypoallergenic, and any fur we use is faux fur. Want a cutlass, a pie tray or bendable arms? Tell us in your first message.

A Barmaley doll usually takes 2–4 weeks. A second outfit or extra props can add a little time, and we'll give you the date when we quote.

The face takes longest. The nose, the eyes and that moustache have to look like Barmaley, not just a man in a pirate shirt.

Then come the clothes: shirt, vest, bandana, boots and, if you want the happy ending too, the chef's jacket and hat. The time frame keeps a small reserve for handmade surprises. If you have a birthday or another date in mind, tell us at the start.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays parcels move slower, so leave some extra time.

A Barmaley doll tends to go to someone who grew up on Chukovsky, or to a child hearing the poem for the first time. Add the making time to the delivery time and count back from your date. For Christmas, order by November 1.

You see photos of the finished doll before it leaves the studio. We pack him so the moustache and the hat arrive in shape.

We've been making custom toys since 2009. People who know Barmaley from childhood notice a wrong moustache or a missing earring straight away.

That's why you approve photos before anything ships. If you don't love the doll, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Thinking of Doctor Aibolit or the crocodile to go with him? Order them together, and the dolls will match in size and style.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
