This Ferdinand the Bull stuffed animal stands over 90 cm (35 in) tall. That's a lot of bull. He's also soft all the way through, horns and hooves included, so there's nothing hard to bump into when someone throws their arms around him. We sewed him to order, the way we make every toy: you tell us what you want, and we make that one for you. Nothing here comes off a shelf.

The bull who would rather smell the flowers

Ferdinand started as a picture book. Munro Leaf wrote The Story of Ferdinand in 1936 and Robert Lawson drew it in black and white: a bull who sits under a cork tree smelling flowers while the other young bulls butt heads. A bee sting gets him mistaken for the fiercest bull in Spain, and he's taken to the ring in Madrid. He sits down and smells the flowers in the ladies' hair.

Our toy follows the 2017 animated film Ferdinand from Blue Sky Studios, directed by Carlos Saldanha, with John Cena as the voice of the bull. It's the black Ferdinand with the shaggy tuft between his horns, the blue eyes and the big goofy smile. We know that film almost by heart. He's one of our own favorites.

Dog owners still call their biggest, softest dog "a Ferdinand": huge, and only interested in lying in the grass. That gentle giant is what a plush this size should be.

What we sewed

  • A round black body on four sturdy legs with brown hooves
  • A tan muzzle, an open smile with white teeth and blue eyes
  • Pale soft horns and a brown yarn tuft on his head
  • A long thin tail ending in a yarn tassel

Your Ferdinand

Want him smaller, closer to Lawson's drawings, or with Lupe the goat at his side? Send pictures and tell us. You get photos of the finished toy before it ships. More classics from books live in book character plushies, film favorites in toys from animated films, and a quieter storybook friend is our Little Prince fox.

We're an independent studio. This is a handmade fan piece, not an official Blue Sky Studios or 20th Century Studios product.

A toy this big has to be soft everywhere, because he'll be leaned on, hugged and sat next to on the couch. So there are no hard parts at all.

  • Black plush fabric for the body and legs, short and soft to the touch
  • Tan fabric for the muzzle and the inside of the ears
  • Soft stuffed horns in a pale beige, and soft brown hooves
  • Brown yarn for the shaggy tuft on his head and the tassel on his tail

All materials are premium and the filling is hypoallergenic. Need a smaller Ferdinand, wire in the legs for posing, or an embroidered name? Say so at the start, because those choices go into the pattern.

A Ferdinand plush usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

At over 90 cm, the pattern is the first big job: the body has to hold its round shape on four legs instead of slumping. Then cutting, sewing and stuffing, which takes a while at this size.

The face comes last. Where the eyes sit and how wide the smile goes decide whether he looks like Ferdinand or like any bull. The time frame includes a small reserve for handmade surprises, so tell us your date in your first message.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays couriers slow down, so allow extra time.

A giant Ferdinand is a big birthday or Christmas surprise, and a sweet gift for anyone who grew up with the book. Add making time and delivery and count back from the date. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before he ships, you get photos of the finished toy, so you see exactly who is coming.

We've been sewing custom plush since 2009. Ferdinand is one of many book and film characters we've sewn from pictures, each for one customer.

You see photos of your Ferdinand before he leaves us, so you can check the face, the horns and the size. If you still don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Not sure whether you want the film look or the book look? Ask before we start. It's easy to decide at the pattern stage and hard to change later.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
