Some toys are made to cheer someone up, and this one does it with its face. The Comet Bumblebee is a round bumblebee plush with two huge googly eyes, an orange cheek and a smile that runs almost ear to ear. We sewed it by hand from a drawing and showed it in December 2014, as a gift meant to lift someone's mood. It was made to order, like everything we sew: we don't keep a shelf of ready bees.
A bee you can read from across the room
The body is one big yellow oval with a wide brown stripe, so the bee looks a bit like a soft pillow with wings. Two pale blue wings stand up on its back. On top of the head sit two short black horns and two long cord antennae with frayed tips that wobble when you pick it up.
The eyes do most of the work. They're white fabric balls with black pupils, set slightly cross-eyed, which gives the bee that happy, slightly dazed look. Underneath, a row of black legs and a short black stinger.
Turn it around and there's a brown name patch on its back with gold letters that read "comet bumblebee" in Russian. A small detail, but it turns a funny bee into a named character.
Made again, never quite the same
This design came back to our table in later years. The gallery shows a few of those bees, each with its own stripe fabric and its own tilt of the eyes. That's how handmade works: same pattern, different bee.

The body is soft yellow plush with a short pile, the kind that feels smooth under your hand. The brown stripe and the back are a ribbed brown fabric.
- Wings: soft pale blue fabric, stuffed so they stand up
- Eyes: white fabric with black pupils, plus an orange cheek patch
- Smile: embroidered in black thread
- Antennae: black cord with frayed tips; legs, horns and stinger in black fabric
- Back: a brown name patch with gold lettering
The filling is hypoallergenic. On request we can add wire to the legs or antennae so they hold a pose, a sound module, or LED lights, and stitch any name onto the patch. Tell us in your first message, since these go in while we sew.
A plush like this usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.
We start with your drawing and work out how a flat picture becomes a round body: where the seams go, how big the eyes should be so the face still reads, how the wings stay upright. Then we cut, sew, stuff and fix the small parts by hand.
That time includes a little reserve for handmade surprises. If the bee is for a birthday or another fixed date, mention it when you write and we'll tell you honestly if it fits.
We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays mail slows down, so allow a few extra days.
To time a gift, add making time and shipping and count back from the date. For Christmas, order by November 1.
Before we pack it, you get photos of the finished toy. The wings and antennae are packed so they arrive the same shape they were in those photos.
