This dachshund plush has a job. It's a hand puppet, and we sewed it to order for a teacher, as a portrait of one real dachshund. A hand goes inside, the dog comes alive, and the lesson gets a lot more fun. Nothing here comes off a shelf: every toy starts with your photos and your idea.
We made it in spring 2020, when a lot of school had moved onto video calls. Picture a class on a laptop screen, and then a black and tan doxie with its tongue out pops into the frame. Hard to look away from that.
A cartoon portrait of a real dog
The likeness is a friendly caricature: the colors and markings follow the real dog. The eyes got bigger, and the grin got wider, because a puppet has to read from the back of a room or through a webcam. What we sewed:
- A black coat with tan points on the brows, muzzle and paws, and a cream chest
- Big glossy eyes, a black nose and an open mouth with a pink tongue
- One ear flipped up, the way dachshund ears often land
- Paws with little black claws and a long thin tail
- A shiny bronze collar with a red heart tag
The badger dog
"Dachshund" is German for "badger dog". German hunters bred them to go after badgers underground, which explains the long body and short legs. At home in Germany they're called Dackel or Teckel. Owners mostly call theirs a doxie, a wiener dog or a sausage dog. Black and tan is one of the classic coat colors, and it's the one this puppet wears.
A plush that looks like your own dachshund
You don't have to be a teacher. Send us a few clear photos of your dog: the face, the side, the markings. Tell us what it's for. The dachshund is sewn from premium plush and faux fur:
- Short black faux fur for the body, the head and the long ears
- Tan and cream plush for the muzzle, the brows, the paws and the chest
- Soft pink fabric inside the open mouth and for the tongue
- Shiny bronze fabric for the collar, with a red heart tag
This one is a hand puppet, so there's room inside for an adult's hand. If you'd rather have a regular stuffed dachshund, we fill it with hypoallergenic stuffing. Fur is always faux fur. A name tag, a different collar or a little sweater can be added while we sew.
A dachshund plush or puppet usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.
We start from your photos and draw the pattern for your dog's proportions: how long the back is, how short the legs are, how the ears hang. Then we match the fur colors and the markings.
The face takes the longest. Eyes, nose and mouth decide whether it looks like your dog or just a dog. The time frame keeps a small reserve for handmade surprises. If it's for a school year or a birthday, give us the date in your first message.
We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays the post slows down, so leave a few extra days.
For a puppet you need for a class, count the making time and the delivery back from your first lesson. For a gift for a doxie owner, count back from the birthday. For Christmas, order by November 1.
Before it leaves, you get photos of the finished toy. We pack it so the ears and the face arrive in shape.
