In The New Mutants (2020), Illyana Rasputin carries a purple dragon hand puppet called Lockheed and talks to it through most of the film. To her he's a protector. When her powers open the way to Limbo, Lockheed is there, alive. We sewed this Lockheed puppet from screenshots of the film, made to order for one fan.
From a few film frames to a puppet you can wear
The puppet is on screen for seconds at a time, often half in shadow. So the pattern came from stills: the long two-tone snout, the wings, the shape of the head. It works the way the one in the film does. Your hand goes in through the fluffy cuff, and the mouth opens and shuts.
His head and back are dark plum. The snout, jaw and chest are soft lilac, with black buttons for eyes and a purple lining inside the mouth. Two pairs of bat wings in deep purple velvet-like fabric sit on his back, and two small horns stick up behind the eyes. Below hang little front paws, hind legs and a long tail. A lilac faux fur ruff covers the wrist.
Under his chin we embroidered his name and a small symbol in black thread. A black tag with a gold embroidered dedication to his new owner hangs at his side.
Kitty Pryde's dragon first
Lockheed first showed up in Marvel comics in Uncanny X-Men #166 (1983), created by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith. In the comics he's a small alien dragon and Kitty Pryde's longtime companion. The film handed him to Illyana. We're an independent studio, and this is a handmade fan piece, not an official Marvel product.
Want your own?
Maybe you'd like the comics Lockheed sitting on your shoulder, or a puppet of another movie sidekick nobody makes. Send us screenshots, photos or a drawing. For example:
- a hand puppet like this one, or a plush that sits on a shelf
- a name or a short message embroidered on a tag
- wire in the wings or tail so you can pose them
- other colors or another size
A puppet like this starts from $360. We agree on the details first, and you see photos of the finished toy before it ships. More dragons are on our dragon plush page and more hand puppets in custom puppets. For another Marvel character, meet Jeff the Land Shark.
A hand puppet has to look right and still move, so the fabrics here were picked for both. The head and body are a soft matte fabric in two shades.
- Dark plum and lilac fabric for the head, body, paws and tail
- Deep purple velvet-like fabric for the four wings and the horns
- Black buttons for the eyes
- Lilac faux fur for the ruff at the wrist
- Black embroidery under the chin, gold embroidery on the black tag
Stuffed parts get hypoallergenic filling. Any fur we use is faux fur. If you want a sound module, LED lights or wire for posing the wings, tell us in your first message, because they go in while we sew.
A puppet like Lockheed usually takes 2β4 weeks.
Most of the early work happens before any cutting. We study your screenshots, draw the pattern and work out how the mouth will open on a hand. Then come the head, the four wings and the small legs and tail, each sewn separately and joined to the body. The embroidery goes on last.
The time frame includes a reserve for the surprises handmade work brings. Need him by a set date? Tell us at once and we'll say honestly whether it works.
We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7β20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Mail slows down around the holidays, so leave extra time.
A Lockheed puppet makes a good birthday gift for an X-Men fan, or a surprise for someone who still quotes The New Mutants. Add the making time to the shipping time and count back from the date. For Christmas, order by November 1.
You get photos of the finished puppet before we pack it, and we pack the wings so they arrive in shape.
We've been sewing custom plush since 2009, and many of those toys started from a few blurry frames of a film, like this one.
We agree on the details before we sew. You see photos of the finished puppet before it ships. If you still don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.
No good screenshots? Send what you have, even a phone photo of the TV. We'll ask about the rest, from the wing color to what the tag should say.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
