A handsome, thoroughly clever, perfectly plump man in his prime. That's how Karlsson describes himself, and who are we to argue. This Karlsson-on-the-Roof toy is sewn by hand in our studio, made to order for one person at a time. We don't keep a shelf of Karlssons. So far we've made him twice, in 2023 and again in 2025, and each one was sewn from scratch for the person who asked.

The Karlsson people grew up with

Astrid Lindgren wrote about the little man who lives behind a chimney on a Stockholm roof in 1955. He presses a button on his stomach, a propeller on his back starts up, and off he flies, usually toward the jam. Many people know him best from the Soviet cartoons Junior and Karlson (1968) and Karlson Returns (1970), with Vasily Livanov's voice. That's the look our toys follow.

What we sewed

He has ginger tufts of faux fur that never lie flat, pink cheeks and a big soft nose. Green sweater, white trousers on one strap, brown boots with real laces. On his belly sits the red button, the detail that matters most. Without it he wouldn't be the real Karlsson. Turn him around and there's the red propeller.

The 2025 Karlsson has a longer nose and a slightly cheekier grin. In some photos he's hugging a big red plush heart. Same character, two different toys, because every one we make is born a little different.

A friend who flies in

He's for hugging, squeezing, taking up to the roof (if mum says yes) and sleeping next to. He suits kids and grown-ups, especially the grown-ups who've got a bit too serious. Everyone needs a friend who can fly in, eat all the jam, press his button and say: "Calm, only calm."

Your own Karlsson

Tell us which Karlsson you want: the cartoon one, a book illustration or a frame you love. We sew him in any size, from one piece.

  • A picture of the Karlsson you have in mind
  • Size and pose, arms out or holding something
  • Extras on request: a sound module, LED lights, poseable arms on a wire frame

A custom Karlsson starts from $405, and the quote is free. You see photos of the finished toy before it ships. He'd get on well with other Soviet cartoon heroes we've made, like Leopold the Cat and the Bremen Town Musicians. More people-shaped toys are in Character Dolls.

We're an independent studio, not affiliated with the Astrid Lindgren estate or Soyuzmultfilm.

His hair is long ginger faux fur, left a little wild on purpose, since Karlsson has never owned a comb. The face, hands and ears are soft beige plush, with dark eyebrows, a wide red grin and pink cheeks.

The clothes are sewn as real clothes: a green sweater, white trousers with a strap across the chest, and brown boots with laces. The red button on the belly and the red propeller on the back are firm and stuffed, so they keep their shape after a lot of hugging.

All our materials are premium and hypoallergenic. We only ever use faux fur. For your Karlsson we pick the fabrics and colours to match the picture you send.

  • On request: poseable arms on a wire frame
  • Also possible: a sound module or LED lights

A Karlsson toy usually takes 2–4 weeks. The estimate keeps a little spare time, because handwork doesn't always go to plan.

We draw a new pattern for each order. The face takes the longest: the nose, the grin and the eyebrows decide whether he looks like Karlsson or just some ginger fellow. Then come the clothes, the boots, the button and the propeller, all cut to fit this one toy.

You get photos of the finished Karlsson before he ships. Need him by a birthday? Say so in your first message.

We ship worldwide. Once Karlsson leaves the studio, delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. He can't fly that far on his own propeller, sadly.

Around the holidays parcels move slower. If he's a birthday gift for someone who grew up on the cartoon, add a few spare days. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Tell us your date when you first write. We'll say right away if it works, counting the making and the shipping together.

We've been making toys to order since 2009. Fans of this cartoon know Karlsson's face by heart and spot a wrong nose at once.

So before your Karlsson is packed, you see photos and can ask for changes. And if he arrives and you don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Karlsson would call that a trifle, an everyday matter.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
