This grey wolf cub walked straight out of a children's book. Someone showed us a page with a wolf in a red polka-dot shirt, and we turned him into a custom wolf plush in 2024. Nobody else has one like him. He was made to order for one small reader, from that one picture.
The wolf from the bedtime stories
In Russian fairy tales the grey wolf turns up all the time. He's in the old lullaby too: "Bayu-bayushki-bayu, don't lie down at the edge, or the little grey wolf will come and grab you by the side." Parents have sung it to babies for generations.
The wolf in this book is a softer version. He stands by a baby's cradle at night with a bottle in one paw and a rattle in the other, grinning. More babysitter than villain. That's the wolf the family wanted in plush.
How we sewed him
We kept the cartoon proportions: a big head, a long muzzle with a brown nose, round yellow eyes and pink insides in the tall ears. The mouth is open in a wide grin with a pink tongue. His fur is soft grey faux fur, with a white muzzle, a white chest and a white tip on the tail.
His clothes come off the page too. A red shirt with white polka dots, cut Russian-style with the opening on the side and trimmed in bright yellow at the collar, cuffs and hem. Under it, blue trousers rolled up at the ankle. Small white claws peek out of his feet.
The family wanted a toy to play with, not a shelf piece. So he's soft and flexible. His paws bend, and he can sit down or stand up in whatever pose a kid picks.

The body is grey faux fur with a short, dense pile that's nice to squeeze. The muzzle, chest and tail tip are longer white faux fur, so the face looks fluffy, like in the picture.
The inner ears are pink plush. The eyes are yellow and black, the nose is a brown plush shape, and the claws are small white details on the feet. His shirt is red fabric with white polka dots and shiny yellow trim. The trousers are blue and rolled at the ankle.

A book page shows one side of the character, so the pattern comes first: big head, long muzzle, a body that can bend and sit. Then we sew the clothes to fit him. The face goes on last, because the grin depends on where the eyes and nose sit.
