"These are the right bees. And they make the right honey." That was the whole caption when we first posted this custom bee plush in April 2015. She was one of a set of bees we sewed by hand for a playroom, made to order from a drawing. Nothing here came off a shelf.

The caption is a joke for anyone who grew up with Winnie-the-Pooh. In A. A. Milne's first chapter, Pooh floats up to a honey tree and decides these are "the wrong sort of bees," so they must make the wrong sort of honey. Russian kids know the scene from the 1969 Soviet cartoon by Fyodor Khitruk. Our bees, we decided, were the right sort.

What she looks like

  • A tan plush face with big embroidered eyes, a soft round nose and a wide red smile
  • Orange velvety "hair" cut as flower petals, layered all the way round the back of her head
  • Long black antennae with dark red pompoms on the tips
  • A round body in red and black stripes
  • Two pairs of holographic silver wings that catch the light
  • Long, floppy arms and legs

Her head is big for her body, the way a cartoon bee's should be. Turn her round and the petals close over the back of her head like an upside-down flower, so she looks as if she's wearing a blossom for a hat. The wings shift from silver to pink and blue as she moves.

A bee of your own

Got a sketch of your own bee, a mascot for a kids' room or a whole little swarm in mind? Send us the drawing, tell us the colours and the size, and we'll work out the pattern. You see photos of the finished toy before it ships. More one-off characters live on our original characters page. Looking for the cartoon bee instead? We've sewn Maya the Bee too.

Most of this bee is short, soft premium plush, the kind that holds a clean shape and looks the same after a lot of hugging.

  • Tan plush for the face, arms and legs
  • Red and black plush sewn in stripes for the body
  • Orange velvety fabric for the petal hair
  • Holographic fabric for the wings
  • Black antennae with red pompoms on the ends

The eyes and smile are embroidered, so there are no hard parts on the face. The filling is hypoallergenic. Want different stripe colours, a name stitched on, or wings in another fabric? Say so when you write, since it changes the pattern.

A bee like this usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

We start by turning your drawing into a pattern. Then we cut and join the striped body, sew the arms, legs and antennae, and stitch each petal of the hair one by one. The wings come next. The face is embroidered last, because the smile decides the whole character.

If you want a set, tell us how many bees right away. A small swarm takes longer than one, and we'll give you a date before we start.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Parcels move slower around the holidays, so leave a little extra time.

A bee for a birthday or a new kids' room? Add the making time to the delivery time and count back from the date. For Christmas, order by November 1.

You get photos of the finished toy before it leaves the studio. We pack her so the antennae and wings arrive straight, not bent.

We've been making custom plush since 2009. A toy sewn from someone's drawing has to look like that drawing, petals, stripes and all.

That's why you see photos of your bee before it ships. If you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Planning a set for a playroom, a nursery or a kids' club? Ask about it before we start. Several bees are easier to plan as one order.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
