Brain the size of a planet, and they ask him to open doors. This Marvin the Paranoid Android plush is the gloomy robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, sewn by hand to order for one big fan. We don't keep a shelf of ready Marvins. Each one starts when someone who loves the books writes to us.

Which Marvin is this

Douglas Adams first put Marvin on the radio in 1978. He is the robot of the starship Heart of Gold, a prototype from the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation with a "Genuine People Personality". It gave him a huge mind and nothing to use it on, so he is bored and miserable most of the time.

Marvin has had a few looks over the years. Our toy follows the 2005 film, where Warwick Davis wore the suit and Alan Rickman gave the voice: a huge round head, short stubby limbs and two half-closed green triangle eyes that say "I'd rather not." If you want the 1981 TV robot or your own idea of the book's Marvin, send us a picture and we'll sew that one instead.

He holds a pose

Marvin is gloomy, but the toy isn't stiff. There's a wire frame inside his arms and legs and his joints move, so you can sit him on the edge of a shelf, bend his head down or prop his chin on his hand. He stands on his own too. Slumped in a corner suits him best.

  • Big round head with a stitched brow line over the green eyes
  • White body with black panels on the chest, shoulders and legs
  • Black hands, and small round joint buttons on the arms and knees
  • Poseable arms and legs

Tell us the size you'd like. We can also add a sound module with a sigh or a line of yours. You get photos of the finished robot before it ships.

Another robot we've sewn is Arif 216. More book heroes are in Book Character Plushies, and film characters in TV Show & Movie Characters.

We're an independent studio. This is a handmade fan piece, not an official Hitchhiker's Guide or film studio product.

Marvin is sewn from premium plush with a short, smooth pile, in a soft creamy white close to the film robot's shell.

  • White plush for the head, the body and the limbs
  • Black plush for the hands and the panels on the chest, shoulders and legs
  • Green appliquΓ© eyes outlined in black, under a stitched brow line
  • A wire frame inside the arms and legs, so they bend and stay put

The filling is hypoallergenic. If you want fur anywhere, it's faux fur only. A sound module or a different size has to be planned before we cut the pattern, so mention it in your first message.

A Marvin plush usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

A lot of it is the pattern. A head this big on a body this small has to be balanced, or he tips over. Then the wire goes into the arms and legs, and the joints get set so he can bend without losing his shape.

The eyes come last. A few millimetres decide whether he looks bored or just sleepy, so we place them by hand. The time frame has a small reserve for handmade surprises. If you need him by a date, tell us at the start.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Parcels move slower around the holidays, so allow some extra time.

Marvin is a good gift for the friend who quotes Douglas Adams at dinner, for a birthday, or for Towel Day on May 25. Add the making time to the delivery time and count back from your date. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before he leaves the studio, you get photos of the finished toy. We pack him so the head arrives round, not squashed.

We've been making custom plush since 2009. Fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide know Marvin's face well, and a wrong eye angle would make him a different robot.

So you see photos of your Marvin before he ships. If you don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Want a version of your own, like Marvin in a towel or holding a tiny "42" sign? Send a sketch and ask before we start. Details are easier to get right in the pattern than to add later.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
