A round copper belly, a hat, a big moustache and legs like stacked springs. If you saw Return to Oz as a kid, you know him at once. This is our Tik-Tok plush, the clockwork man of Oz, sewn by hand from bronze faux leather.

We don't keep a shelf of these. Every toy is made to order for one person, from the pictures and wishes they send us. This Tik-Tok was sewn for one customer. Yours would be sewn for you.

Who Tik-Tok is

L. Frank Baum wrote him into Ozma of Oz in 1907, the third Oz book: a mechanical man of burnished copper who runs on clockwork. He has separate windings for thinking, talking and moving, and he can't wind himself. When one runs down, he just stops mid-sentence. In 1985 Disney put him on screen in Return to Oz, the dark sequel a lot of people still call "the Oz movie that scared me". The film gave him very stout legs and a moustache he talks with instead of his teeth.

Fans of the books and the film both call him a favorite. You'll find him on plenty of "wish there was a toy of…" lists, next to Jack Pumpkinhead and Billina the hen.

What we sewed

Everything on this robot is soft. The ball body has a riveted ring around the middle, a round porthole on one side of the chest and a shield-shaped plate on the other. The arms are built from short padded segments, and the hands have separate fingers. The legs are rings stacked on wide round feet. Glossy green eyes sit in bronze rims under the hat brim, and a black strap with a real buckle runs under the chin. Turn him around and you'll see two wind-up keys on his back, like the ones Dorothy uses to get him going.

You can change the size, the shade of the metal, the eyes or the details, or ask for the book look instead of the film one. Before the toy ships, you get photos to check.

More from Oz: the Iron Woodcutter and the Scarecrow King. More robots: the green Android Robot and the Robot Bunny. We're an independent studio, not affiliated with Disney.

Tik-Tok is sewn from metallic bronze faux leather. It has a warm copper shine, so from across the room he looks like metal. Pick him up and he's soft.

  • Copper-colored studs along every seam, the brims and the chest plates, for the riveted look
  • Glossy green eyes set in padded bronze rims
  • A stitched, padded moustache and a black chin strap with a metal buckle
  • A grey mesh window in the chest porthole
  • Two wind-up keys sewn onto his back
  • Hypoallergenic filling, packed firm so the ball body and the ring legs hold their shape

Want a sound module inside, poseable wire in the arms or LED eyes? Ask at the start. Extras go in while we sew, not after.

A Tik-Tok plush usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

Most of that time goes into the pattern and the small parts. The body is a sphere with a separate brim, every arm is several padded pieces, and each leg is a stack of rings. Then come the studs, the eyes, the moustache and the keys, one by one.

The estimate includes a little reserve for handmade surprises. If you need him by a certain date, say so in your first message and we'll tell you honestly if it works.

Once he's finished, shipping usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country. Around the holidays the post slows down, so leave a few extra days.

A Tik-Tok makes a good gift for someone who grew up on the Oz books or still talks about Return to Oz. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before anything ships, you get photos of the finished toy. Check the face, the moustache and the shine, and tell us if something should change. He goes in the box after you say yes.

We've been sewing toys to order since 2009. Film and book characters with lots of hard-edged parts, like armor, robots and machines, are work we know well. Turning metal into something soft that still reads as metal is half the fun.

You see your Tik-Tok in photos before he ships, while there's still time to adjust a rivet or the size of the eyes.

If he arrives and you don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, no questions asked.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
