This Chinese crested plush is a portrait of one dog. Its owner sent us photos of a beloved pet, and we sewed this toy to order from them, in honor of that dog. We didn't pick a breed toy off a shelf. We started from the pictures.

We made it in 2015. The last photo in the gallery puts the real dog and the toy side by side, so you can compare for yourself.

A crestie, the way it really looks

A hairless Chinese crested isn't hairless at all. It keeps hair in three places, and breeders even have names for them: the crest on the head, the plume on the tail and the socks on the feet. The rest is smooth skin, often with pale spots. Owners call the crest a mohawk, and plenty of them will tell you their dog is so ugly it's cute.

So the toy follows the dog, not a generic puppy:

  • A short tan coat for the "bare" skin, with the lighter patches where the real dog had them
  • A long blond crest falling over the eyes, white fringes on the ears
  • Fluffy socks on all four feet and a curled plume tail
  • Dark glossy eyes, a soft grey-pink nose and whiskers
  • A red collar with a ring, a red bow with a brooch and a green curled ribbon

Your own dog, hairless or powderpuff

Chinese cresteds come in two kinds, and both can be born in the same litter. The hairless one you see here, and the powderpuff, covered in a long silky coat. We can sew either. Send a few clear photos of your dog: the face, the side and the markings. Tell us if you want it realistic like this one, or softer and more cartoon-like for hugging. Before anything ships, you see photos of the finished toy.

More dogs we've sewn from photos are in dog replicas. Cats and other pets live in pet stuffed animals, and lifelike pieces like this one are collected in realistic stuffed animals.

A crested is mostly about texture, so we use two very different coats on one toy:

  • Short, close tan pile for the body, the legs and the face, the dog's "bare" skin
  • Long, soft faux fur in blond and white for the crest, the ear fringes, the socks and the plume
  • Glossy eyes, a shaped nose and thin whiskers for the face
  • A red collar with a ring, a bow with a brooch and a curled ribbon

We use premium, hypoallergenic materials, and fur is always faux fur. A collar like your dog's, a name tag or a favorite bow can be added while we sew. A powderpuff gets long faux fur all over instead of the short pile.

A Chinese crested plush usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

We draw the pattern from your photos: the fine legs, the deep chest, the long neck. Then we match the skin tone, place the pale spots and set the crest so it falls the way your dog's does.

The face takes the longest. Eye shape and the line of the muzzle decide whether it looks like your dog or just like the breed. The time frame keeps a small reserve for handmade surprises. If there's a date you care about, put it in your first message.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays the post slows down, so add a few days.

Planning a gift for a crested owner? Count back from the birthday or anniversary: making time first, then delivery. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before it ships, you get photos of the finished toy. We pack it so the crest and the plume arrive in shape, not flattened.

We've been sewing toys to order since 2009, and a portrait of someone's own dog is the most personal kind. You know that face better than anyone, so you judge it first: we send photos of the finished toy before it ships.

If it arrives and you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Not sure about the look yet? Realistic or cartoon, hairless or powderpuff, standing or sitting: ask before we start. Changing a pattern is much easier than changing a finished toy.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
