A fluffy white beard, wire glasses, a doctor's cap with a red cross and a hand held out to say hello. This Doctor Aibolit doll is the kind animal doctor from Korney Chukovsky's tales, sewn by hand to order.

We don't keep ready toys. You tell us the character, and we make that one doll for you.

On our Russian site we called him a bright character from a much-loved children's story. We love sewing characters from cartoons and fairy tales, in any size and however tricky they are.

Who Doctor Aibolit is

His name means roughly "ouch, it hurts". Chukovsky put him in the poem Barmaley and a prose tale in 1925, then gave him his own poem, Aybolit, in 1929. He's a loose Russian take on Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle. Aibolit treats every animal that comes to him, and when he hears the animals in Africa are sick, he travels all the way to the Limpopo river to cure them.

Generations of kids met him on screen too: a 1938 film, Rolan Bykov's Aybolit 66 in 1967, and Kievnauchfilm's animated Doctor Aibolit in 1985.

How we made him

  • The face: big blue eyes, a large soft nose, rosy cheeks and an open mouth, like he's about to ask where it hurts
  • Beard and hair: long white faux fur for the beard and the two tufts over his ears
  • Glasses: a real wire frame bent to sit on his nose
  • Doctor's outfit: a white cap and a white coat, both with a red cross, brown buttons, pockets, a dark tie, grey trousers and glossy black shoes
  • Hands: separate fingers, so he can wave, point or rest a hand in his pocket

Want him closer to a cartoon frame, the 1967 film or an old book illustration? Send the picture and pick a size in the order form. You'll see photos of the finished doll before it ships.

His old enemy is here too: the Barmaley doll. More people-shaped characters live in Character Dolls, and the Bremen Town Musicians dolls come from another Soviet cartoon. For more storybook friends, see Fairytale Plushies.

We're an independent studio. This is a handmade fan piece, not an official product of any publisher or film studio.

Every piece of his outfit is cut and sewn for this one doll.

  • A sewn fabric head and hands, with the nose, cheeks and mouth shaped by hand
  • Long white faux fur for the beard and the hair at the sides
  • Glasses made from thin wire
  • A white cap and white coat with red crosses, brown buttons and pockets
  • A dark tie, grey trousers and glossy black shoes

The filling is premium and hypoallergenic. Want a doctor's bag, a thermometer, a sound module or bendable arms? Tell us in your first message, because these go in while we sew.

A Doctor Aibolit doll usually takes 2–4 weeks. Extra props can add a little time, and we'll give you the date when we quote.

The face takes longest. The eyes, the nose and the beard have to add up to a kind old doctor, not just a man in a white coat.

Then come the coat, the cap, the glasses and the shoes. The time frame keeps a small reserve for handmade surprises. If you have a birthday or another date in mind, tell us at the start.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country. Around the holidays parcels move slower, so leave some extra time.

Aibolit tends to go to someone who grew up on Chukovsky, to a child hearing the poem for the first time, or to a real doctor or vet with a sense of humour. For Christmas, order by November 1.

You see photos of the finished doll before it leaves the studio. We pack him so the beard and the glasses arrive in shape.

We've been making custom toys since 2009. People who know Aibolit from childhood spot a wrong beard or missing glasses straight away.

That's why you approve photos before anything ships. If you don't love the doll, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Want Barmaley or the crocodile to go with him? Order them together, and the dolls will match in size and style.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
