Someone wanted a small friend for a child, one that could go everywhere with them. They sent us a picture of a fluffy blue owl with enormous eyes, and we made this owl plush keychain from it. It's one of a kind and was made to order, for that one child and nobody else. We don't keep ready owls on a shelf. Each one starts with your picture.
From a painting to a pocket owl
The picture was a painted owl: lilac and blue feathers, a puffed-up chest and two round yellow eyes that take up half the face. A painting can be as fluffy as it likes. A toy has to hold that look in fur you can actually hold.
So we went with long-pile faux fur in bright blue with lilac tips. It sticks up on top like ruffled ear tufts and falls loose over the body, the way the brush strokes do in the picture. The owl fits in one palm, which is the point of a keychain: small enough to clip on a backpack, big enough to hold.
The eyes do the talking
We sculpted the eyes from polymer clay, not felt or plastic buttons. Orange rims, a purple ring and a glossy black pupil with a white highlight. They give the owl that wide, slightly surprised stare from the painting. The little feet that peek out under the fur are sculpted clay too.
People who carry plush keychains often say the same thing: they love the little guy too much to let him get scuffed, so he ends up in a pocket for luck. A soft owl like this one is fine either way.
Your owl next
Send us a drawing, a painting, a sticker or your child's own sketch. We'll keep what makes it recognizable and tell you what has to change to work as a toy.
- Any fur colour, or two colours like this one
- Eye colour and shape matched to your picture
- A keychain size, or a bigger owl to hug
A custom owl plush keychain starts from $360, and the quote is free. You see photos of the finished owl before it ships. For more owls, see our sleepy owl plush. For another keychain made from a picture, there's the cup monster keychain. Or browse every plush made from a drawing.
The body is long-pile faux fur in bright blue, with lilac tips that show when the fur moves. It's soft to stroke and stands up on top of the head like ruffled tufts. We use only faux fur, never real fur.
The eyes and feet are sculpted from polymer clay. Clay keeps a crisp, glossy shape at this small size, so the orange rims and shiny pupils stay sharp.
- Blue faux fur with lilac tips
- Sculpted polymer clay eyes and feet
- A small pointed beak between the eyes
- Soft stuffing that keeps the round shape
For your owl we pick the fur and the clay colours to match the picture you send.
A small owl like this usually takes 2-4 weeks. That figure has a bit of spare time built in, because handwork doesn't always go to plan.
Most of the time goes into the face. The clay eyes are sculpted and finished before they go in, then set so the stare reads right. A few millimetres change the whole expression.
You get photos of the finished owl before it ships. If it's for a birthday or another set date, tell us in your first message.
We ship worldwide. After the owl leaves the studio, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier.
It's small and light, but the post still slows down around the holidays, and before Christmas most of all. For a Christmas gift, order by November 1.
A keychain owl is an easy birthday surprise. Tell us the date when you first write, and we'll say right away whether making plus shipping fits.
We've been making toys to order since 2009. Small toys with big faces are the ones where every detail shows, so we check the eyes and the fur closely before anything else.
You see photos of your owl before it's packed, and you can ask for changes then. If it arrives and you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.
That goes for a palm-sized owl as much as for a giant bear.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
