Owls are night birds, so in the daytime this one is off duty. Eyes shut, brows drooping, nightcap pulled on. This sleepy owl plush was sewn by hand in our studio after a picture, as a New Year gift. We posted her in January 2017. Like every toy here, she was made to order: nobody picked her off a shelf. Someone brought an idea, and we sewed it.
How we turned a picture into an owl
A drawing doesn't tell you how fur should fall or how big a beak should be. Those choices are ours to make, and here they all go toward one feeling: sleepy and soft.
The body is long-pile lilac faux fur that hangs down like heavy wings. The face is white, with two closed eyes and black lashes. White brows sweep out to the sides and end in long black tips, which makes her look even more tired. Below that sit an orange beak, a beige striped belly and black claws.
Then the nightcap. Dark purple fleece, yellow stars, a round yellow pompom, and it sits a little crooked, the way a cap does when you've been asleep in it.
An owl of your own
Most of our toys start the way this one did: with a picture. It can be a drawing, an illustration you found, a sketch your kid made or a photo of a favorite toy. You could ask for:
- an owl in other colors, or one that's awake
- a different hat, a scarf or pajamas
- a name embroidered on the cap
- the same sleepy look on another animal
We agree on the details with you before we start, and you get photos of the finished toy before it ships.

The owl gets her shape from long-pile faux fur. It's soft enough to stroke and long enough to hang like feathers over the wings. We only use faux fur, never real fur.
- Lilac faux fur body and wings, white faux fur face and brows

- A fleece nightcap with sewn-on yellow stars and a pompom
The filling is hypoallergenic, so the owl is fine for the bed or the sofa. Extras like a sound module, LED lights, wire in the wings for posing or an embroidered name go in while we sew, so mention them in your first message.
An owl like this usually takes 2–4 weeks.
We start with your picture and turn it into a pattern. Fur this long hides the seams, but it also hides mistakes, so we check the shape a few times while sewing. Then comes the face. Closed eyes look simple, yet a few millimeters in the angle of the lashes decide whether she looks sleepy or sad.
The cap is cut and fitted last. The time frame includes a reserve for handmade surprises. If you have a date in mind, tell us early.
We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Mail slows down around the holidays, so plan extra time.
This owl started as a New Year gift, and a sleepy toy suits the winter holidays well. For Christmas, order by November 1. For a birthday, add the making time to the shipping time and count back from the date.
Before we pack the owl, you get photos of the finished toy. We pack her so the fur and the nightcap arrive in shape.
