This Homunculus loxodontus plush is Zhdun, the gray "one who waits," sewn as a big floor pouf. Toy and seat in one: the wide, rounded bottom keeps him upright in a corner, waiting with you. We made him to order, like everything here. You tell us the size and the details, and we sew one for you. There's no shelf of ready Zhduns.

Small Zhdun plushies, 20 to 50 cm, turn up all over the internet. A big one you can lean on is a different thing.

Where Zhdun comes from

The original is a 2016 sculpture by Dutch artist Margriet van Breevoort, made for Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Its real name is Homunculus loxodontus: the head of an elephant seal, a soft larva-like body and human hands folded in its lap. It's about how people feel sitting in a doctor's waiting room.

In January 2017 a photo of it landed on the Russian site Pikabu. Within weeks it was a meme across Russia, Ukraine and beyond, pasted into paintings, queues and offices, always waiting for something. Russian speakers named it Zhdun, from the verb "to wait." Tumblr called it Snorp, Reddit called it Wosh. Some fans just say "the hospital sitting guy" or "the elephant seal who waits."

What we sewed

We made this Zhdun plush in early 2017, right while the meme was everywhere.

  • Soft blue-gray plush, with the rolls on his neck and belly stitched in
  • The long drooping nose and glossy dark eyes under heavy lids
  • Long thin arms and separate fingers, clasped in front like the sculpture's
  • A wide round base that works as a pouf

Your Zhdun, your size

Desk size, floor pouf or bigger? We've also sewn a Zhdun pouf 180 cm tall for an exhibition stand. Send a picture or describe what you want: the color, the size, an embroidered name or message, even a sound module. You see photos of the finished toy before it ships.

More meme toys we've made: the Cat in Bread, the This Is Fine dog and the Stoned Fox, Zhdun's old meme buddy.

We're an independent studio. This is a handmade fan piece based on the Homunculus loxodontus sculpture, not an official product.

Zhdun is sewn from premium plush fabric in a soft blue-gray, close to the sculpture's color but much nicer to touch.

  • Short, soft plush over the whole body, so the neck rolls and belly folds show
  • Glossy dark eyes set under sewn eyelids
  • Separate stitched fingers on the long arms
  • Hypoallergenic filling, packed so the wide base keeps its pouf shape

He doesn't need fur, but if you want any, it's faux fur only. Want him grayer, bluer or in another color altogether? Say so at the start, together with extras like an embroidered message or a sound module, because those go in while we sew.

A Zhdun plush usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

We start with the pattern at your size, so the long nose, the neck rolls and the round base keep the right proportions. Then the arms and fingers, sewn one by one so the hands can clasp. The eyes and eyelids go on last, since that sleepy, patient look is what makes him Zhdun.

The time frame includes a small reserve for handmade surprises. For a really big pouf, or if you have a date in mind, tell us in your first message.

We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays couriers slow down, so it can take longer.

Thinking of him as a birthday joke for a friend who's always late, or a mascot for an office that's always waiting on something? Add the making time and delivery together and count back from the date. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before he leaves, we send you photos of the finished toy. Then we pack him so his nose and hands arrive in shape.

We've been sewing custom plush since 2009. A lot of what we make is a character no store carries in the size or shape you want, and a Zhdun you can sit next to is that kind of job.

You see photos of your Zhdun before he ships. If you still don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Not sure about the size, the color or how big the base should be? Ask before we start. It's much easier to get a detail right in the pattern than to fix it later.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
