People online call the cassowary a murder bird and a living dinosaur. This cassowary plush is the friendly version: a round heap of black shaggy faux fur, a bright blue head, a golden casque on top, and two very long legs ending in big clawed feet. We sewed him to order in 2011, from our own design. He's the only one. We don't keep a shelf of ready toys. We make the one you ask for.
The head
A real cassowary has no feathers on its head and neck, just bare blue skin, and a tall horn-like casque on top. So we made the head from smooth blue plush and the casque from mottled golden velvet. He has an orange eye, a long velvet beak, and two red wattles hanging down the neck. Real southern cassowaries have exactly two.
The legs
The legs are the best part. They're long, golden ochre, with brown scale markings, and each foot has three thick toes with long dark red claws. In the wild the inner toe carries a dagger claw up to about 12 cm long. Ours are friendlier. In the photo he sits on a small tin box with his legs stretched out in front, like he's waiting for someone to notice the claws. Cassowaries can't fly anyway, so sitting costs him nothing.
Your cassowary, your way
- A realistic cassowary or a cartoon one from your drawing
- Standing, sitting, or legs that bend (wire on request)
- Any size
- An emu, an ostrich or any other bird you have in mind
You see photos of the finished toy before it ships. A cassowary plush like this starts from $370, and the quote is free.
More big birds: our pelican with a mustard pouch and the stork with a baby bundle. Or look through our realistic stuffed animals.
The body is long-pile black shaggy faux fur, with the same coarse, hair-like look as a real cassowary's feathers. The head and neck are bright blue plush. The casque, beak and legs are golden velvet with brown markings.
- Orange eyes with a blue plush rim
- Two red fabric wattles on the neck
- Three toes on each foot with long dark red claws
For your bird we pick fabrics from your photos or drawing. Wire in the neck or legs for posing is possible on request.
A cassowary like this usually takes 2-4 weeks, with a small reserve for handwork surprises.
The legs take the longest. They're long and thin, the scale markings have to line up, and the toes and claws have to come out even on both feet. The head comes next: the casque has to sit straight and the beak at the right angle.
You get photos of the finished toy before it ships. If you need it by a certain date, tell us in your first message.
We ship worldwide. Once your cassowary leaves the studio, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier.
Holidays slow the post down, and December is the slowest month. For Christmas, order by November 1. More ideas are on our custom Christmas plush page.
For a birthday or any other date, tell us when you need him and we'll say straight away whether sewing and shipping fit.
We've been sewing toys to order since 2009. On a bird like this we check the legs first: both have to hold their shape, and every claw has to be sewn on firmly.
You see photos of your cassowary before it's packed and can ask for changes then. If it arrives and you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
