Short, straight answers to the questions people ask before ordering custom plush gifts, with real toys we’ve made as the examples.
We’ve been sewing toys to order since 2009, more than 2,100 of them so far. Each one was made by hand for one person, from their pictures and their wishes. There’s no shelf of ready toys here. So when someone asks whether a custom plush is worth it as a gift, or how it differs from the official plush in the shops, we can answer with toys that actually exist.
Each answer below comes first, in a sentence or two. The detail and the examples follow.
What custom plush toys are popular for birthdays?
The birthday plush that lands best is a character the person already loves: a game or cartoon hero, their own pet, a doll that looks like them, or a toy sewn from a child’s drawing. It works because nobody else has that toy.
For kids it’s usually the hero of their favourite game. Our Blabbit plush from My Singing Monsters went out as a gift in 2016, and we sized it for one job, hugging: the boy it was made for holds it with both arms. Another boy who loves Sonic had been dreaming of a big Dr. Eggman, not a hand-sized one. The one we sewed him is almost as tall as he is.
For grown-ups the gift tends to get more personal. One customer’s girlfriend changes her hair colour every other month, so he ordered a portrait doll of her with four felt wigs: pink, green, blond and black. Other popular picks are a plush copy of the family dog or cat and a toy made from a kid’s drawing.
Plan ahead. Making a toy usually takes 2β4 weeks, and delivery usually takes another 7β20 business days, so tell us the birthday when you ask for a quote. More ideas for weddings and anniversaries are in our guide to plush for special occasions.
Are custom plush toys with outfits worth it as gifts?
Yes, when the outfit is what makes the character recognisable. A suit, a veil or a hat is often the first thing people notice, and on a custom toy it’s cut and sewn for that toy, not pulled off a rack.
Take the villain from Rescue Rangers. Without his clothes, our Fat Cat plush would be a grey tabby. In his purple coat with the orange lining, the blue vest with a gold button, the red tie and the gold pendant, he’s Fat Cat. Uzi from Murder Drones works the same way: the knitted beanie with a pom-pom, striped leg warmers, lace-up boots and a railgun she can hold.
Outfits also make wedding gifts. Our bride and groom dolls have faces painted on cloth from the couple’s photos, a white dress with raised glittering dots, a veil, a bouquet of pale pink rosebuds and a black suit with a bow tie. Back in 2010 we dressed a badger bride and a squirrel groom in a ruffled veil and a tuxedo jacket.
A name, a date or a short phrase can go on too, embroidered or printed. One thing we don’t do is sew clothes on their own for a doll you already have. The outfit comes with the toy we make.
How do official plush toys differ from custom plushies?
Official plush is licensed by the company that owns the character and made in large runs, in the sizes and versions that company picked. A custom plush is one fan-made toy, sewn by hand for you in the size and version you ask for, and it isn’t licensed merchandise.
“Third-party” usually means a copy someone else mass-produced. A custom studio is a different thing again: one toy, one customer, and we say plainly that it’s a fan piece.
If an official plush exists in the size and version you want, it’s a fine choice. People come to us for the one that doesn’t exist:
- Too small in the shops. The Rathalos plushies from Monster Hunter you can buy are chibi and about the size of your hand, and many are out of production. The Raziel ones announced are small and sold on pre-order. The biggest shop Eggman is about 15 inches.
- Never made at all. My Singing Monsters has official plushies for monsters like Mammott and Wubbox, but we haven’t found an official Blabbit. The only official Fat Cat we could find is a palm-sized Tsum Tsum sold in Japan in 2018.
- The wrong version. Official Uzi plushies exist, but fans keep asking for Uzi with her gun, or N and Uzi as a pair. Those have to be made.
Which companies make plush toys of video game characters?
Two kinds: toy companies licensed by the game’s publisher, which make the official plush, and custom studios like ours, which sew a single plush of any character, version or scene to order.
For My Singing Monsters, for example, official plushies have come from Commonwealth Toys, Youtooz and Makeship. Licensed lines like that cover the popular characters in standard poses.
A custom studio covers everything else: side characters, older versions, a favourite scene. Our Gregg from Night in the Woods wears paper cups on his ears and holds a knife, straight out of the Snack Falcon scene. Our Raziel was made from a customer’s 3D model. More are in our video game character plush, each one a handmade fan piece, not official merchandise.
Is building your own stuffed animal online worth it compared to regular ones?
It depends on what “build your own” means. Picking a ready body, colour and outfit from a menu gets you a nice toy fast. Having one made to order from your own picture gets you a toy that didn’t exist before, and that’s worth it when the design matters more than the speed.
A regular shop toy is one design made thousands of times. A made-to-order toy gets its own pattern and its own fabric, and every piece is cut, sewn and stuffed by hand. The face goes on last, because a millimetre either way changes the character. That takes weeks, not minutes.
No menu has a badger bride in a veil next to a squirrel groom in a tuxedo, and that pair only exists because someone asked for it. We use faux fur only, never natural fur. There’s more on this in handmade plush vs mass-produced.
Do custom plush toys turn out like the design?
Close, but as a handmade toy, not a printed copy. Fabric has thickness, a face has to work in three dimensions, and a flat picture never shows the back of the head. So on complicated characters you approve a plush drawing before we cut anything, and on every order you see photos of the finished toy before it ships.
Raziel is a good example. The customer sent a detailed 3D model, which is great to look at and impossible to sew. Our artist drew a simpler plush version with the same stance and face, the customer approved it, and only then did sewing start. Both are below.
Lou the Dog started as two drawings by an animator in Italy: a colour sketch with notes for the palette and a pencil drawing for the pose. Our job was to turn the two into one dog that looks like her character from every side.
If something in the photos looks off, we fix it before shipping. And if the toy arrives and you don’t love it, you have 14 days to ask for a full refund, for any reason. Details are on our guarantee page, and this article goes deeper into how a drawing becomes a toy.
Where can I buy a made-to-order doll with custom features?
From a studio that makes dolls from photos. We sew two kinds: portrait dolls with a face painted by hand, and fully plush portrait dolls with an embroidered face. Either one is made for one person, from their photos.
Our Little Witch is the painted kind: brown eyes, fine lashes and blush painted onto cloth, long blonde hair under a tall black hat, a small broom in her hand. The girl in the orange hoodie is the plush kind, with side-swept brown hair, stitched green eyes and a wide grin.
The custom features are up to you: a favourite dress, a work uniform, tattoos, piercings, a necklace she never takes off. We also make 20 cm cotton dolls in the chibi style K-pop and anime fans collect. See all our mini me dolls.
Can a custom plush talk, light up or move?
Yes, on request. A sound module, LED lights and poseable wire limbs can all be built into a soft toy.
The Little Witch doll has a small pocket with a lid on her back, under the dress, where a sound module sits. You can send us a finished module, for example one recorded at a studio, and we sew it in, removable with a zip or Velcro. Or we build a compartment for one while making the toy.
A Blabbit can get its monster sounds, LED elements or movable ears and arms. An Eggman can have poseable arms. Tell us what you picture and we’ll say how we’d make it.

Custom toys start from $350.
A bigger size or extra details can cost more.
Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
