He sits with his long legs sprawled out, a black cap pushed back on his head and a grin that says the meter is already running. This orange striped cat plush is a taxi driver. We sewed him in the spring of 2012 from a drawing, made to order as a one-off. He isn't from a shop shelf, and there was never a second one.
When he left the studio we wrote just one line about him: this sweet taxi cat will now brighten someone's gloomy spring weekdays.
From a drawing to a cat with a job
A drawn character can do things a real cat can't. He can have arms twice as long as his body, stripes painted on like a sweater and a face that's mostly smile. Our task was to keep that cartoon feel once he had a back, a weight and a tail.
So the head is big and round, with a cream muzzle and a wide stitched grin. The eyes are two small round buttons, set close together, which gives him that slightly dazed, happy look. His arms and legs are long, thin and striped, and the paws have little cream fingers. A fluffy orange faux fur bib covers his chest, there's a belly button on the tummy, and the tail ends in a white puff.
The cap makes him a taxi driver. It's a small black peaked cap with a white badge: a letter T over a row of checkers, with wings on both sides.

The taxi cat is sewn mostly from soft fleece: bright orange for the body, black for the stripes and spots, cream for the muzzle, ear insides and paw tips. Fleece keeps his long arms and legs light and floppy, good for dangling off a shelf.

The filling is hypoallergenic. For your own cat we can add wire in the limbs so they hold a pose, a sound module or an embroidered name on the cap. Mention it in your first message, since these go in while we sew.
A cat like this usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.
First we turn your drawing into a pattern. A flat cartoon has no side or back, so we decide how round the head is, how long the limbs run and how the stripes wrap around them. Then come cutting, sewing the stripes in, stuffing, and the small things last: the face, the cap and its badge.
The time frame keeps a reserve for the surprises of handmade work. If the cat is for a birthday or another fixed day, tell us the date when you write.
We ship worldwide. Delivery usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier. Around the holidays mail gets slower, so allow a few extra days.
