This cowfish plush is a longhorn cowfish, the little yellow boxfish with two horns sticking out over its eyes. We sewed it to order, like every toy we make. There's no shelf of ready fish here. You tell us which sea creature you love, and we make one for you.
Why a cowfish
Fish fans call cowfish goofy, and they mean it kindly. The real Lactoria cornuta lives in the warm Indo-Pacific. Its body sits inside a stiff, boxy shell, so it can't wiggle like other fish. It hovers and steers with its fins and tail instead, a bit like a tiny helicopter. Somebody online called boxfish "little water blimps", and that's about right.
The horns gave the cowfish its name. There's a pair in front, pointing forward and up, and another pair at the back, under the tail end.
What we put into this one
The body is soft lemon-yellow plush with a white belly and dozens of teal-blue spots, big and small, scattered the way they are on the real fish. Both front horns stand up firmly and end in pale tips. A pointed spike runs back along the underside.
Then the eye: a big black pupil inside a glittery gold-green ring, set in a puffy yellow socket. It catches the light whenever you turn the fish.
The fins are white fabric with yellow stripes stitched along every ray, from the small side fins to the wide fan of the tail.
Your fish, your way
A cowfish plush can be realistic, like this one, or rounder and more cartoonish. Send a photo of the fish, a drawing, or just its name. Tell us the size you have in mind and any colors you want changed. You see photos of the finished toy before it ships.
More sea creatures we've sewn: the toothy Wonder Fish made from a drawing, a little stingray from a game, and a realistic baby seal. All our critters are in Animals.
The cowfish is sewn from soft short-pile plush, smooth and velvety, so the colors read clearly. Most of the body is a warm lemon yellow, with a white belly underneath.
- Teal-blue spots of different sizes all over the body, horns and spike
- A large eye with a black pupil and a glittery gold-green ring
- White fins with yellow stripes stitched along each ray
- Soft hypoallergenic filling, firm enough to keep the boxy shape and the horns upright
For your fish we can match the colors to photos of the real species or to your own idea. Want a pufferfish, a different boxfish or a cowfish in another color? Tell us when you write.
A fish like this usually takes 2-4 weeks, with a small reserve for handwork surprises.
The pattern comes first. A cowfish is mostly box and horns, so we test the shell shape and the horn angles before cutting the fabric.
Then come the spots and fins. Placing dozens of spots and stitching each fin ray takes time, and that's the part that makes it look like a real cowfish and not just a yellow fish.
Need it by a certain day? Put the date in your first message.
We ship worldwide. Once your cowfish leaves the studio, delivery usually takes 7 to 20 business days, depending on your country and the carrier.
Mail gets slower around the holidays, and Christmas is the worst of it. For a Christmas gift, order by November 1.
A cowfish plush makes a good present for a reef-tank keeper, a diver or anyone whose favorite aquarium exhibit is the odd little boxfish. If it's for a birthday, tell us the date and we'll say right away whether making and shipping fit.
We've been sewing toys to order since 2009, and sea creatures are a regular part of our work.
Before anything ships, you get photos of the finished fish. Want the horns longer or the spots bluer? Say so and we fix it then. Your fish is sewn for you alone, so small changes at this stage are normal.
If the cowfish arrives and you don't love it, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Why?
No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.
Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.
Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.
You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.
One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.
That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
