Striped arms, a little green cap, knitted trousers with one strap and a button. This is our Findus cat toy, needle felted from wool, with eyes painted by hand. We first wrote about him back in 2011 and called him "100% charming and playful". We still think that's fair.

Nothing here is waiting on a shelf. Every Findus is made to order, for one person and the wishes they send us. Tell us which Findus you remember, and we'll make that one.

The cat from the Pettson books

Findus comes from the picture books by the Swedish author and illustrator Sven Nordqvist. The first one, Pancake Pie, came out in Sweden in 1984. Old farmer Pettson lives alone until a neighbor brings him a kitten in a cardboard box labeled "Findus" green peas. The name stuck. Findus talks, wears green-striped clothes and a cap, and never lets Pettson get bored. In Germany they're Pettersson und Findus, and the films and the TV series made them a childhood favorite for a lot of people. Ask around and someone will tell you they named their own cat after him.

What felting gives you

Felt makes a different Findus from a plush one. The wool is shaped with a needle, layer by layer, so his white muzzle, ginger ears and every stripe on the arms and the long tail are part of the toy itself, not sewn on. The face comes out sharp and expressive, with green eyes that look straight at you. The trousers and the cap are knitted separately and put on him like real clothes.

The gallery shows two felted Findus toys from our studio. The first has a bright white face and rust-red stripes. The second has a warmer tan head, glossy green eyes and ribbed knit trousers. Same cat, two moods. Yours can follow either one, or your favorite picture from the books.

Prefer him soft and huggable? See our faux fur Findus the Cat and the Christmas Findus. For more felted cats, there's our realistic Garfield and a Puss in Boots from Shrek, boots and cavalier hat included. We're an independent studio, not affiliated with Sven Nordqvist or his publishers.

This Findus is needle felted from wool. The fibers are worked with a barbed needle until they lock into a firm, light figure. That's why the stripes, the ginger ears and the white chest have soft, natural edges.

  • White and ginger wool for the body, rust-brown wool for the stripes
  • Green eyes, painted by hand
  • A black nose and long whiskers
  • Knitted green trousers with a strap and a button, and a knitted cap

A felted toy is best for a shelf, a desk or a gentle cuddle. If you want a Findus to hug every night, a plush version in faux fur is the better pick. Tell us how he'll live, and we'll suggest the right build.

A felted Findus usually takes 2–4 weeks to make.

Felting is slow, careful work. The body is built up from loose wool, then the head, the ears and every stripe are added and firmed with the needle, a little at a time. The eyes are painted at the end, when the face is finished. Then the trousers and the cap get knitted to fit him.

The estimate includes a little reserve for handmade surprises. If you need him for a birthday or another date, say so in your first message and we'll tell you honestly whether it works.

Once he's finished, shipping usually takes 7–20 business days, depending on your country. Around the holidays parcels move slower, so leave a few extra days.

Findus makes a lovely gift for someone who grew up on the Pettson books, or for a reader passing them on to their own kids. For Christmas, order by November 1.

Before he ships, you get photos of the finished toy. Check the face, the stripes and the trousers, and tell us if anything should change. He goes in the box after you say yes.

We've been making toys to order since 2009, and book characters are some of our favorite orders. People know these faces from years of bedtime reading, so we look closely at the stripes, the cap and the look in his eyes.

You see your Findus in photos before he leaves the studio, while there's still time to adjust a detail.

If he arrives and you don't love him, you get a full refund within 14 days, for any reason.

Why?

No ready-made pattern. Your photo or drawing doesn’t come with one. Our artist builds the pattern from scratch and turns a flat picture into a 3D toy. It’s the hardest and slowest part.

Materials picked for your toy. The right color, fur length and texture. Sometimes we order fabric just for one project.

Sewn by hand. Every piece is cut, sewn, stuffed and finished by hand. The face takes the most time: move an eye a millimeter and the character changes.

You approve it first. When your toy is ready, we send you photos. Something looks off? We fix it before shipping.

One toy, not a thousand. A factory spreads design costs over thousands of copies. Here, all that work goes into one toy: yours.

That’s why prices start at $350. And on a personal order, if you don’t love your toy, you get a full refund.
